We love our tragedies.
We're both broken in our own little ways
We're broken, but we fit together just right
You know I saw the black inside your eyes
I saw they were eclipsed by mine, and they looked just right.
“I just received news about some recent activity in an empty castle where Viktor used to be based when he had control of the Lycans,” the Commander started and looked up at Raze.
“I know it well,” Raze said. “Spent time there being treated like an animal.”
“Good, then you’ll know how to get around,” the Commander commented. “We’ve pulled a schematic of the entire castle, and James and two others will be able to lead you through the castle in case you need a quick exit.”
They spent over an hour working out a plan to get in and which teams would go in first to clear the other groups. Finally, when the Commander left, Selene looked at Raze and he returned the look.
“Did you know Sonja?” she asked. Selene finally knew the truth about Viktor’s daughter and her love for Lucian, but Selene had never had someone to talk to about the dead vampire.
“I did,” Raze replied. “She loved Lucian and she wanted us to be free from our slavery. Sonja nearly made it out of the castle to be with us, but her father got to her first.”
“Kraven said I reminded Viktor of her.” Selene hated Kraven, but for what it was worth, he was protecting her from the truth about how her family died.
“You resemble her and you’re more like her now that you've realized your kind started the war and now it needs to be stopped.” Raze paused before continuing, but knew he would be testing the waters with his questions. “Where’s Michael?”
“Marcus killed him,” Selene replied, looking back at the schematic.
“Who’s the half breed?” Raze asked.
“His name is James - he came from another dimension and now he’s helping me.”
“And obviously has strong feelings for you,” the Lycan added. Selene turned to look at him.
“He shouldn’t.” Selene looked back down to study the schematic. “I want a couple of your men to look after him here while we’re out there - I don’t want him to be alone.”
“You have my word,” Raze said deeply. “I would like something in return.”
“Name it,” she replied quickly.
“The location of Michael Corvin,” Raze replied. “Where did you bury him?”
“Why do you need him? He’s dead - he’s of no use to you now.”
“We need his blood,” the Lycan answered.
“For what?” Selene stepped closer.
“Lucian,” replied Raze. “He’s still alive, but he’ll be dead soon and Michael’s blood is the only thing that can keep him alive.”
Selene waited before telling Raze where Michael’s body was buried.
“There’s something else,” the Lycan added as Selene went to speak to James. She turned around and waited in the doorway. “He found a way to bring Sonja back.”
“That’s impossible. A vampire can’t be brought back when they’ve already been turned into dust.” Selene made her way back over to the Lycan.
“Lucian found a way,” he said. “When she comes back, she will take her rightful place as leader of the vampires with Lucian as her king.”
“The vampires will turn against them if that happens,” said Selene. “No vampire that followed Viktor will agree to have a Lycan as their leader.”
“You turned your back on Viktor when you realized what he’d done - we could use more like you.”
With that in mind, Selene nodded her head and went to go find James testing out some new gadgets. At the moment, he was wearing a pair of goggles with night vision lenses.
“What are you doing?” asked Selene, moving closer to him to remove the goggles and set them on his head.
“Testing out their gear,” James replied brightly. “And guess what? They said I can keep some of this stuff, so when you come back, we can take most of this back home.”
Selene tried not to smile, but as usual, James had an effect on her.
“Are you leaving?” he asked sadly.
“Soon,” she replied. “We’re gathering the rest of the soldiers and you’ll be guarded by two of the Lycans in my absence.”
She removed one of her guns and handed it to him.
“To shoot, take off the safety, pull this back, aim, and fire.” Selene stood behind him and made him hold the gun up at the wall as if he were going to fire it. Her right hand rested on his right as he held up the black and silver gun, while her left hand rested on his hip making sure he knew how to stand. “These guns are powerful and can give quite a kickback, so make sure your legs are apart like this.”
“Do you really think I’ll need this?” he asked, putting the safety back on.
“No, but I like to be prepared for anything, just in case.”
“Oh, the Commander wanted me to give this to you,.” James handed her an ear piece with a camera so he could guide her through the castle. “It has a lens on the right side - looks like a sunglasses lens, but you’ll be able to see what I send you; it retracts back and forth so it won’t get in your way when you're trying to see. If you need me to unlock a door, stand close to the lock, and I’ll send a signal through the earpiece to open it.”
“Thanks.” Selene smiled. “That phone I gave you - you can send me the schematics, other signals, and keep in contact with me if the earpiece fails, so if it does, keep a close eye on it.”
“Yes, ma’am.” James gave her a salute he had seen one of the soldiers give Selene earlier.
“We’re ready,” the Commander announced. “Everyone, in your positions; Selene’s team goes in the first jet, Raze’s in the second, and my team, follow me in the third.”
“Good luck,” James said and bent down to kiss her hard, fearing she wouldn’t return.
“You too,” she replied against his lips. “You’ll be fine.”
Selene walked away quickly, not looking back; she grabbed her issued gun and headed into the first jet, where she was given a chip with her handler I.D. by one of the pilots. She put the small chip into the gun and a woman’s voice popped up.
‘Handler ID: Death Dealer.’
She put the ear piece on and heard James talking to the soldiers.
“Can everyone hear me perfectly?” asked James.
“Yes!” everyone replied.
“Good - now the Commander told me your team will be taken to the West side of the castle so I’m going to send you all a small schematic of the doors to get inside. The doors have two Lycans guarding them in front and behind-”
“We can release them and they can help us inside,” one of the Lycan soldiers offered and looked over at Selene for approval.
“Two Lycan soldiers go in first; release the other Lycans and we’ll have to split the team once they help us inside.” Selene ordered. “If they refuse,” she looked over at the Lycan soldiers, “I’ll leave it to you to deal with your own kind.” They nodded their heads and got ready as the jet landed less than a mile away from the castle.
Selene recognized the castle immediately; it was where she killed both Marcus and William, but the dark castle was nearly rebuilt. Since the coven had moved to a mansion, the castle was deserted and had been for centuries. Once they left, the Lycans went back to destroy it as it brought back bad memories for all of them.
Knowing the vampires and Lycan-slaves have good hearing, the team had to land far enough to not be heard, but close enough to walk the rest of the way.
They ran through the woods and stopped just before reaching the end, facing the castle. She divided them into two teams so they knew where to go once they were inside.
“Pack, Braun,” Selene looked over at two of the Lycan soldiers and gestured for them to go first.
Selene’s team watched the Lycans work, releasing the two slaves that guarded the doors out front.
“This is Mack and Cal,” Pack introduced the two new Lycans, who had turned back into their human forms. “They’ve recently discovered what they are so they’re unsure of what to do, but they will help us get through the doors.”
“Mack, you go with Braun and the others; Cal, you’re coming with me and Pack.” Selene looked at the scared young Lycan.
“You’re a vampire,” Mack spat out. “We’re tired of taking orders from your kind-”
Before he could go on, Selene launched herself at the young Lycan, grabbing his neck in a tight hold, and pushing him against a tree.
“I am not like the rest of my kind - you do as I say, or I’ll kill you myself.” She threatened and her eyes turned silver again. She waited until he nearly lost consciousness before releasing him. “Then again, maybe I am, but unless you’d like to find out, I suggest we go and tread softly. Once we find the Elder, shoot to kill - do not wait for my command to shoot him. The bullets will only stall him; cut off his head or push him into the sun when it starts to rise - it’s the best way to kill him.”
“There are other Lycans on the other side of the doors,” Cal said, not wanting to face Selene’s wrath.
“Right,” she said, remembering James had said the same thing. “You and Braun release them and make sure they’re ready to take orders.” Braun took off with Cal, both of them turning into large werewolves. They returned five minutes later with two more Lycans. The new Lycans were so young - it was no wonder they were being used as slaves.
“So you’re the famous Selene,” one of the new Lycans observed and walked up to face her.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Pack warned. “Her bite is ten times worse than her bark.”
The young Lycan backed away as Selene’s eyes turned silver; she glared at the younger man, wanting to kill him, but now was not the time to start a fight.
“What else is on that other side of the doors?” asked Selene.
“Nothing, really - it was just us.” The young Lycan replied, frightened by the vampire’s silver eyes. “The halls are mostly empty; most of the vampires are near the center to protect the Elder, and the other vampires are in some other mansion; I don’t remember where, and the coven isn’t all here yet.”
“What do you know of the Elder’s condition?” she asked next.
“He’s in the very center of the castle, in the tower, guarded by vampires and Lycans; they brought him in last night, in a silver coffin. I know they’ve already started him on blood support to help his regeneration faster.”
“Who’s leading the vampires now?” asked Selene.
“Someone named Erika,” he replied.
“Bitch,” Selene cursed in a whisper. “Let’s move in; kill anyone who gets in our way.”
Selene led them towards the door and waited for one of the younger Lycans to climb the wall and open it from the other side. The vampire walked in, getting her gun ready before going inside first. The hall split in two and James sent them two schematics, letting them decide who would go where.
“Braun, you and the others take the left.” Braun nodded his head and took his side of the team to the left, while Pack and the others followed Selene. She rounded the halls slowly, ducking her head around to check for the vampire guards. Crouching down to the floor, she could smell at least three male vampires; she moved her head to get a better look at their positions and let the Lycans in her team change forms while she attacked the three men.
James cringed at the sound of bones breaking and a possible throat being ripped out though the earpiece. He then led Selene and her team through the main hallways while helping Braun and his team through the other hallways.
Before Selene was able to walk further, they heard alarms going off and she looked at Cal.
“Someone set off the intruder alarm; they must know you’re here.” Cal said and turned into his Lycan form. Not even stopping to think, Selene started firing her large gun at her fellow vampires, watching the effect of the ultraviolet ammunition.
Her team followed in behind, taking pleasure in killing the vampires and the Lycan slaves who tried to kill the team were also killed.
“Selene,” it was Raze on the earpiece. “What’s your position?!”
She could hear guns blazing on his end of the line.
“We’re making our way towards the center of the castle!” she yelled as she ran, shooting at the same time. “We were in the west, making our way towards the north!”
“We’re almost there!” Raze yelled.
On her way through the halls, Selene met up with familiar faces and wasted no time in killing them with bare hands. One vampire shot her five times, but Selene quickly recovered and twisted their necks, nearly ripping off their heads. She looked up at the tower, knowing for certain that’s where the Elder was; she could feel him.
“James, give me a schematic for the tower in the center of the castle!” she yelled, stopping behind the walls to reload.
“The entrance is on the other side of where you are now - facing east,” James said, quickly pulling it up and sending it to her.
“Figures,” she mumbled to herself. “Towards the tower!” Selene yelled and saw her team running behind her to catch up. “The Elder is in the tower - all fleets to the tower!”
“I just reached it,” the Commander said, trying to break in the door. “It needs a key to get in - I don’t have it!”
“Just wait for me, I’ve got it!” Selene yelled back and before she knew it, she was reunited with an old ‘friend’. “Erika…”
“Selene,” the blond vampire glared at the dark haired vampire. “How can you kill our own kind?”
“If you knew what I know, you’d do the same.” Selene replied, “And I have no problem killing you, too.”
“That’s too much arrogance, even for you, traitor.” Erika hissed and showed off her fangs and blue eyes.
Selene, however, showed her old friend her silver eyes and slightly longer teeth. Erika paused at the sight of Selene and tried to run, but Cal got a hold of her first, along with the other younger Lycan.
“No one can save you now - not even Kraven. Arrogance doesn’t fit you, Erika….” Selene left Erika to the Lycans, not bothering to watch what a bloody mess they turned the blonde vampire into.
Making her way towards the East with a few gunshot wounds, cuts, and a bloody lip, she met up with Raze and the Commander, holding up the circular key. She set it in the slot, turned it and let the Commander inside first. Raze’s team was around killing off the vampires to stop them from coming towards the tower while Selene and the Commander’s team followed their leaders.
“It's pitch black in here,” the Commander said.
“You two go ahead,” Raze said, taking off his brown coat and fully turning into his Lycan form. He snarled, then jumped up to cling to the tower, then ran up to the top. Selene knew what he was doing. Sunrise was coming and even the Elder was allergic to the sun, still.
Selene led the way up the spiral cement stairs slowly, using the light on her gun to see better in the dark.
“Careful,” the Commander said, standing next to her on the stairs.
“He’s fully regenerated,” said Selene, pausing on the stairs. “I can feel it.” As soon as she heard a noise behind her she turned around just in time to see the Elder. He grabbed her hard and with his sword, drove it through her chest, then ran up towards the ceiling and stuck the end of the sword into the ceiling, keeping her suspended in the air.
“Selene!” James yelled. He had seen the whole thing on his monitor through Selene’s earpiece, and started to break down. “Someone help her!”
“What happened?” one of the Lycans guarding James asked.
“The Elder,” James cried. “He killed her.”
“Looks like Viktor’s favorite vampire is a traitor after all,” the Elder hissed at her, driving the sword deeper into her chest, twisting it until she lost consciousness.
The teams inside the tower ran after the Elder, but he was too fast for them. The top of the tower was a large, dark platform, and it was a very long way down.
“Where is he?” one of the human soldiers asked.
“He’s close,” Pack said. “I can sense it.”
“Sense it?” the Elder’s voice echoed through the tower before his screams shrilled, causing the echo of his screams to weaken the human soldiers. “You dirty, filthy animal!”
The Elder brightened the inside of the tower by lighting candles all around them. The teams’ eyes widened at the sight of the Elder vampire when they saw what he looked like. He had eight legs like a spider, but the torso of a vampire. He had a black, salivating mouth, several pointy teeth and black eyes.
“Viktor should have killed all of you when he had the chance!” the Elder yelled. He then used one of his spider legs to stab one of the human soldiers in the chest, killing him instantly. However, he didn’t just kill with his legs - that was also how he fed. “Being trapped in that fucking tomb for centuries had its advantages. I drank the blood of spiders when they made their way through…and they made me better.”
“Fire!” the Commander shouted and the soldiers started shooting at the Elder, causing him to charge at them, sending a few soldiers off the ledge, including some of the Lycans, who managed to cling to the wall instead of falling to their deaths.
Before the Elder was able to attack again, Raze, on the outside of the tower, started taking apart the wooden ceiling, causing the Elder to scream out in pain when the sun started making its way in.
“Keep shooting it! Shoot at the ceiling!” the Commander yelled just before the Elder jumped at him and sank his many sharp teeth into his neck. Blood splattered everywhere and the screams of the Commander filled the large dome tower. The Commander only stopped kicking and screaming once the Elder pulled the Commander’s head off his body.
“Oh shit,” Braun whispered and continued shooting at the Elder. He looked up and blinked a few times to make sure he was seeing what he really saw.
Selene dropped from the ceiling, dripping with blood from her chest down to her abdomen and stabbed the Elder in the back. His screams filled the tower once more, but before he could turn around and get to her, with the last of her strength, she tossed him to the opening in the ceiling Raze made, causing him to start burning.
Raze helped her get the Elder through the hole and as Selene gave one final push, the Elder stabbed her again, this time with one of his legs, bringing her down to fall with him.
“Selene!” Raze yelled, trying to reach for her, but she was too far away. The fall would have killed them both; no one, not a vampire or a Lycan, could survive a fall that high.
Before the Elder hit the ground, he turned into dust, and the rest of his followers stopped fighting with the Lycans down below. Selene was right: once their leader was dead, they would have to appoint a new leader, and without one, they were completely useless and helpless.
Raze watched Selene’s body hit the ground, knowing she couldn't have survived the impact. Closing his eyes, he looked away, then climbed through the hole of the tower and helped anyone who was wounded.
“Where’s Selene?” Pack asked the older Lycan. James heard the question, hoping she still lived.
“She fell with the Elder - she didn’t make it.” Raze shook his head. He had wanted Selene dead in the past, when she was under the control of Viktor, but when she finally learned the truth, he no longer wanted her dead. Viktor manipulated her and in return, Selene killed him and stood with the Lycans to fight against her own kind.
James cried at his station over the loss of his new love. He didn’t know her as well as he would have liked, but he knew her enough to know he had fallen in love with her. He opened her up, got her to talk about the things that caused her emotional pain, and in return, he gave himself to her - all of him.
This was why the Doctor didn’t like attaching himself to his companions this way - because if he lost them the way James had now lost Selene, it would kill him more and more.
“I’m sorry, James.” Raze said into the earpiece. He heard the human crying over Selene’s death and sighed, knowing they had lost a good soldier. “We’ll bag her body and bring her to you.”
