A quick post

This is a post that comes about after a discussion I had in CoH with some friends about tabletop RP settings. We talked about WoD and D&D and I'd like to think I sounded halfway intelligent and not whiny like I probably did. The discussion was about different settings and new versus old game worlds and I did not fully understand it. I did get the whole Storyteller/DM debate but I think that one of the things that can make comparing settings hard is how much the DM/Storyteller counts. Any game setting can be a disaster with a bad Storyteller and any game setting can be amazing with a good one. What I got out of the discussion was a breakdown of three elements that could factor into how enjoyable a game is.

These elements are:
  1. Story: This is how you feel about the story, NPCs
  2. Characters: This is about the character you play or the other PCs in the game, this is essentially how you feel about your character and/or other characters.
  3. Players: This is about how you relate with the other players in the game including the storyteller
Obviously these elements are not as cut and dry as they might originally seem but they can provide an interesting way to understand a game. There is a sense where the third element of the breakdown is the most critical, I think it's because in game drama can make for fun games but OOC drama can break up gem sessions.
