It's over. And it was damn worth the wait.
Joss Whedon (writer) and John Cassaday (artist) just finished their 2+ year run on Astonishing X-Men from issues 1 to 24 with a bang. Giant Size Astonishing X-Men came out today, capping off a storyline that's been building through the previous twenty-four issues, and damn was it a doozy.
Without going into details of the final issue (because anyone who has even a passing interest in either Joss or the X-Men should borrow this shit from me right now), there's a moment--the sort of experience that I've come to expect from Mr. Whedon--that just left me with my jaw on the floor. Perfectly executed, unexpected, and beautiful. Joss and his team have moved certain aspects of the X-Men along in incredibly interesting ways throughout their run, and I'm sorry to see them move on.
Warren Ellis will be picking up the run, and he's always a blast, but...I don't know. This is something to be savored, for sure. The issues are on my shelf, if anyone's interested.
