Chapters 1 - 11 were all about the selection and grooming of the various Tributes to appeal to the wealthy idle of the Capitol. Now it’s time to send them to the Arena.
Half-starved and comparatively undertrained compared to the tough, prepared Career Tributes, Katniss has no real expectation of surviving the Hunger Games. Such fatalism is dangerous in the Arena, but Katniss isn’t going to lie down and die. She is determined to do her best to survive, if only so that her sister would see she’d kept her promise.
Thrown onto the back-foot nearly immediately, she gets a backpack but loses the bow and arrow she wanted, Katniss does what she does best: survive.
