KMM WIPs recs march 2012
OK this is a weird kind of rec, but several people have been asking recently what KMM WIP are worth following and since I read loads of those, I guessed a list was in order.
Here are the fics I absolutely completely adore:

Arthur and Merlin have been together for a few years when Arthur is diagnosed with cancer.
Happy ending optional, but I am a sucker for them. I won't complain if you make my heart hurt though.
A Change of Pace (the way Merlin getting into Arthur's life turns it upside down is completely incredible. Uther is fabulously interesting and Merlin is more awesome than ever.)
Arthur/Merlin modern au
Due to some plot convenience, Arthur gets a new flatmate, Merlin. Arthur works in his father's bank, is very conservative, and very-very serious, pedantic, uptight young man. In comes Merlin: openly gay, dressing like a model, always laughing, no boundaries, doing something suitably creative, and being incredibly open about everything in life, including sex.
Arthur has never been close to such a person, and is fascinated by Merlin to the point of painful (and shy) curiosity about everything he does/says. Slowly but surely Merlin makes him relax and learn how to enjoy himself. Arthur ends up smitten and ready to do something flamboyant and crazy like shout it from the rooftops.

Arthur/Merlin modern AU
h/c, differently able character
A young Arthur is caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Apart from the fines, his community service/punishment from Uther is to work for a charity for people with spinal cord injuries.
That's where he meets Merlin, a young man of his own age. Merlin is the most wonderful and annoying person Arthur has ever met. Merlin is also paralysed from the waist down after having been hit by a drunk driver.
A happy ending of some sort would be greatly appreciated.
Bonus points for Merlin being really intelligent and self-sufficient and Arthur being a bit insecure despite his prattishness.
Every Story is a Love Story (the prompt already made pray whatever God is or isn't up here for a fill and the fill is even better than I hoped)
Arthur/Merlin modern AU
Camelot Publishing, lead by Arthur, specialises in romance (think Mills and Boon). After market research indicates that the readership wants gay historical romance, Arthur commissions a new series.
Morgana insists that they need Merlin, their bestselling writer, on board. At first, Merlin does not want to. The reason for Merlin's initial refusal becomes more obvious with each new novel. All of his couples are versions of him and Arthur, as he is secretly in love with Arthur and can't help himself.
Everyone at Camelot have opinions on this. Some hope that Merlin will get his "Prince", others think Merlin is too good for Arthur.
Only Arthur remains oblivious.
Bonus points for adding as many Merlin characters as possible! I would love Gwaine as a Fabioesque cover model who appears on a staggering number of Camelot's historicals covers.
A Kind of Serendipity (I have so so so much love for this fill and it's a truly well done way of getting Arthur to accept magic.)
Arthur/Merlin (But Arthur doesn't know that)
When he was a little boy, Prince Arthur found a secret room in the castle library, behind a revolving bookcase. Naturally, because daddy says magic is evil and the room is full of naughty magic paraphernalia, the little prince vows never to return.
Many years later, when the goblin that gave him donkey ears is recaptured, he recognises the box his manservant caught it in from the room he swore never to return to.
Unable to sate his curiosity, Arthur goes back to the room late one night and pokes around.
And keeps going back.
Eventually, he takes a book with him. And then another.
Reading from the perspective of sorcerers, Arthur begins to wonder about why so much about has been deliberately kept from him; why, when most of the spells he reads about are harmless, must all magic be banished from Camelot? And so on and so forth.
Eventually, he notices someone else is using the secret room; and eventually, the prince and 'Emrys' enter into a correspondence, once Arthur realises that Emrys has been saving his backside and his kingdom every now and then, and wants to say thank you.
Whether or not Arthur falls in love with the secret sorcerer who keeps saving him - in and around the events of series 3 and maybe 4 - is up to author, if Merthur is the order of the day.
TL;DR: After the goblin incident, Arthur remembers the room in the library, and starts reading all the books in there, coming to conclusions his father wouldn't approve of. He and a sorcerer named Emrys start leaving notes for each other, and the prince may or may not fall for the secretive sorcerer who keeps saving Camelot.
There Are No Gays In Football (excuse me for stating the obvious but it couldn't not be here. And I'm sure there are people who haven't read it yet so...... One of the best current WIP in fandom in my pov)
Arthur/Merlin, modern!AU, Footie!AU!
Okay, here’s the thing, I’m looking for university or professional level, NOT high school, and I don’t want Merlin to be part of the team, but I’d like him to be something more than just a fan, like someone attached to, but not a member of the team- I have this wild image of him as a physiotherapist (maybe a specialist) they have brought in because someone important to the team (like Arthur *hint, hint*) has been injured, but that’s just a thought.
I’d also love to see the team/uniform colours be Pendragon Red because they’re the Pendragon Dragons, since daddy owns the team/the Pendragons founded the uni with the team/uni mascot being a dragon crossed with a sword because I’m uber-cheesy that way, lol.
We can burn brighter (The relationship between Arthur and Merlin is amazing, as well as all the characters)
Arthur/Merlin Gwen/Lancelot, Modern AU
Gwen and Lancelot meet completely by chance, in the street, when Lancelot does something incredibly noble like run after the guy who snatched Gwen's purse, or push her off a car's way or something... And because they're absolutely adorable and nice and wonderful and meant for each other, they instantly fall in love.
A short time after, they decide to make their relationship official by inviting all their respective friends to break the news.
Nobody understands the underlining tension when Arthur, Gwen's best friend's brother/step-brother "meets" Merlin, one of Lancelot's best friends.
I see all the gang already at a "mature" working age, and Arthur and Merlin first met when they were younger (can be late teens/early twenty or later)
Tl;dr Gwen and Lancelot going out make Arthur and Merlin meet again, reviving a part of their past they'd rather forgotten.

Arthur and Other are in a long distance, unhappy relationship. For whatever reason, Arthur is expect to stay with Other. He meets Merlin and they strike up a fast, emotionally deep, friendship. They often flirt, and have some romantic feelings towards each other. But Arthur and Other have discussed "The Line" which would define cheating on each other: Kissing on the mouth, any touching of private parts and sex.
Merlin goes to visit Arthur for the weekend, at night the end up having a light make out session, but never cross The Line. (kissing/biting necks, playful wrestling, frottage, whatever) On the last night together after an intense session they end up with their mouths barely touching, whispering to each other, but still maintaining The Line. They both want it so badly but they know how guilty they would feel if they crossed The Line.
Leon/Percival
the sweet touch of love (... just. Read it <3)
Leon/Percival
Percival thinks that he has met the perfect man for him in Leon. He's fit, a bit shy, thoughtful and altogether wonderful but behaves a little oddly whenever anyone gets in his personal space.
He discovers something from Arthur, Leon's good friend. Leon has haphephobia, the fear of being touched.
He asks Leon out anyway. But the question remains, can you fall for someone if you're never allowed to touch them?
(Would not mind a happy ending, but no sex)
Merlin/Morgana
We Are the Masters of Our Past (author, I know you'll read this and you know I am watching you... WRITE! è_é)
Merlin/Morgana, optional Arthur/Merlin, reincarnation.
Merlin and Morgana are happily married when Morgana remembers their previous life as bitter enemies. Merlin, who doesn’t remember (yet) and doesn't understand his wife's new insecurities, tries to reassure her of his love, but she doubts, thinking that it would change if Arthur returned. When he does, looking for Merlin, she does her best to keep Merlin in the dark.
Bonus for events in the past life having a subtle effect on Morgana's behavior, like flinching when Merlin offers her water.
