Russia versus Japan

Aug 30, 2006 11:43

After the fatal shooting of a Japanese fisherman a fortnight ago, Russia has released two of the three fisherman that were detained for fishing illegally in Russian waters.

What this brought to light is that as a result of a dispute between Russia and Japan over the ownership of Kuril Islands, no formal peace treaty was signed after the end of World War 2 and so the two countries are still technically at war!

More information from a Russian blogger here and at some point I'll endeavour to find a Japanese blogger for a view from the other side.

Are there any other countries out there who are peaceful and yet still technically at war with each other?
