Eeek! Sounds pretty bad. Computers...can't live with 'em, can't go back to the 1970s.

Good luck getting it sorted out, and if you end up needing to buy a laptop, I'm pretty happy with my Dell Inspriron. Had a problem with the motherboard earlier this year, and recently the A/C adapter, but the Dell customer service techs were really responsive and helpful and the problems were fixed faster than I thought possible. I don't know if that's a recommendation--I had two problems in the first year of owning it! But I like the computer itself and I'll probably extend the warranty.

It sounds to me like you just need to replace the battery inside your CPU. The thing is, what kind of computer do you have right now? I have a PowerMac G4 that I used back when I was an undergrad and it started to wind down on me two years ago, similar to what you're experiencing with yours right now. It turns out that all my computer needed was to have the battery replaced. As soon as I did that, my PowerMac was as good as new. Of course that PowerMac is just now collecting dust in the corner of my workspace, but what the hey.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd still back up all the files in the computer and get someone computer-savvy to actually diagnose the problem for you. I was lucky with my computer and saved a bundle by simply replacing the old battery with a new one until I was able to afford a new computer.

This link is very useful too: Why does my computer need a battery?

Hope this helps you a little.
