Love Story 2050 (small spoilers and synopsis)
In a word: you need to see this film!
Unfortunately, I can't find an image of the cool UK poster that convinced Becky and I to see this movie, but it is an awesome film! It's (apparently) Bollywood's first attempt at a SCI FI movie and has met with some poor reviews. But here's a quick synopsis and why we both loved it and will be looking for the DVD when it comes out.
This movie is long and the theater you see it in will probably give you an intermission. This is a good thing because there is a natural break in the 3 1/2 hour film, it really is more like two movies. So, what's it about?
Our hero, Karan, is a lonely figure whose mom has died and his father is more interested in running his business than looking after his 23 year old son. This gives him ANGST. I wrote that in big letters because he doesn't have angst, he has ANGST, with the movie opening with Karan stealing and trashing his father's favourite car. With his father's money and nothing to do, our hero spends his days playing video games (pay attention - that's a plot point! Sort of.), doing extreme sports and hanging out with his friends, who we never see again in the movie, so don't get too attached to them.
Then he meets the lovely Sana. He's all impulsive and crazy (talking her into stealing "winkydinks" - you will see and fear winkydinks) and she's all reserved and quiet. Opposites attract and they have a good effect on each other, loosening up Sana and calming down Karan. He is introduced to the family and is accepted, they start thinking about spending the rest of their lives together. At this point, in the movie, it's 2008 and Becky and I were wondering, as it's an hour into the movie, when are they going to get to 2050?
Unfortunately for Karan/Fortunately for the plot, Sana meets an unfortunate end and everyone is devastated. Fortunately for everyone, Karan's crazy uncle has built a time machine and they head off to the year 2050 where Karan is convinced that Sana has been reincarnated. This isn't quite as crazy as it sounds and is explained in the movie. You do need to be willing to just go with it at this point though.
INTERMISSION
With the help of their new robot lady friend, they find Sana in the future. She was lucky enough to be reincarnated as Zeisha - the future's biggest rock star and idol. They see her in concert, but because it's the future it's a floating concert, a la Final Fantasy X-2. Awesome! Predictably, at first, she doesn't remember Karan, but slowly begins to wonder about him and falls in love again. However, their roles are somewhat reversed from the first part of the movie, she's a carefree soul who can do and is used to doing anything she wants (including humiliating her fans on her own weekly TV quiz show), whilst he is much more cautious - not wanting to get caught by the police, who're after him, or sound like a crazy time traveler. After all, he comes from 2008 and probably saw 12 Monkeys.
The villain of the piece shows up. He's the all powerful techno-wizard of the future. And wears a crushed velet cape with a huge collar and a welding/ski mask. The former/future lab assistant of Karan's uncle, he's mad at missing out on the plans for the time machine and wants to steal the machine for himself. And Zeisha has a robot teddy bear and an obsessive power hungry female manager - and is having a sexual relationship with both of them, but not at once. Okay, she may not have been on screen, but it is heavily implied in both cases.
So now the stage is set for true love to win out, after a shoot out with the villain's stormtroopers, a lightsaber fight with the villain's stormtroopers, a show down between Karan and his robot clone (like Fakor from He-Man), a flying motorcycle chase through the future cityscape, and a roof top kung fu battle hadouken throwing final show down between the villain and our hero. And just in case you've forgotten, this is a Bollywood movie so:
IT IS A MUSICAL.
If any of that appealed to any part of you, go see this movie. Sit back, relax and let this movie take you on a wild ride that really has no idea where it's going except to awesomeville by any and every route. You will, likely, never see anything like this again and have definitely not seen anything like it before. I will be looking out for the DVD release and will be encouraging everyone I know to see this movie, at least once.
