Part 1, Chapter 6

Aug 20, 2006 15:40

The next few months were among the most confusing and conflicted of Ennis’ life.

He knew what would have happened if David hadn’t turned away when he had, recognized the gathering storm in him and the point when lightning was going to strike, no two ways about it. They’d have been on the ground together next to that stream, doing another kind of ( Read more... )

oh yikes, how intense. i'm not quite sure how Ennis is making it from day to day...

but this probably how some of us have lived with our own brokeback fever?

as always,
patiently awaiting more... but needing more of jack, or more of david, or more of something...

Yeah, this is the end of the first part of the story, where Ennis is making a very difficult transition in accepting his own sexuality. I would have preferred to do it faster, but Ennis in this story is based on the version of Ennis in the film and he just refused to hurry. Just as well, as big changes start happening over the next few chapters.

And I can't believe I actually failed to catch that "macaroni and bee casserole" typo. The Twists weren't THAT poor.

I have read a lot of accounts of Ennis-in-anguish as he grieves for Jack. But nothing, nothing I have ever read compares to the unimaginably heartbreaking pathos of Ennis lost in imaginings of the ordinary banality of the life he and Jack might have shared. Your phrase "mundane holiness" actually made me gasp out loud with its precision. You're like a surgeon with your wordsmithing. You make your mark, take your knife, and cut...and the blood flows.

It's amazing. I'm in awe. All I can say is I wish I'd written it, and that's the best compliment I know how to give.

I posted it at Brokeback Slash today; a synopsis and links to the two new chapters. Didn't overlook it - just finished the writing and posting late at night and didn't quite finish!

I am so deeply grateful, sorry I jumped to conclusions. This is a beautiful story and you have a very vivid way with words, I can imagine what you are writing, it's compelling. The way you describe the sexually charged energy between Ennis and David, "..recognized the gathering storm in him and the point when lightning was going to strike, no two ways about it.." that is absolutely wonderful. and the way you write Ennis, his heartbreaking fantasies about Jack, how it should have been. I wish I was as articulate in my comments as you are in you writing. Thank you.

This story represents a struggle to overcome more than a decade of writing "dryness", so believe me, I'm very grateful for your encouragement.

You bet - and sad as it seems, it's a basically positive development in this chapter. Some stages of healing are painful.
