Title: Just Live
Author: talkofcake
Rating: G
Pairing: Adama/Roslin
Spoilers: post-Revelations (4x10)

Summary: Sometimes it's not enough to just live.

Disclaimer: Just takin' them out to play!

A/N: This is a tad bit depressing, mostly because I'm so emo over this hiatus of doom and the promo that SCIFI REFUSES TO AIR JUST YET. So I wrote this, it takes place either right after or a while after the end of Revelations. Hopefully it ends on a happy note, or the implication of it does. Feedback, as always, is welcome!

The world had already ended once, but the apocalypse seemed to pale in comparison to the barren, radioactive wasteland underneath her feet. She listened to the cries of those mourning their lost brethren-in whatever barbarous fashion caused them to nuke themselves to Hades-or simply because of the fact that the last four years of persevering through the destruction of the human race brought them only to this: the alleged Promised Land. And yet, amidst the blatant sorrow, disappointment, agony, and the distress around her, only one question plagued her mind.

“If this is Earth, why am I still alive?”

She had never intended to ask it out loud, nor had she intended for him to hear her. He had heard her however, that she was sure of by the way he grunted and shifted uneasily beside her. When he gave her no answer in return, his silence was not unwelcomed by her. Answers of any kind weren’t exactly bountiful at the moment, this she also knew.

It was bordering on ironic actually, she realized in that moment. On the same day the world ended the first time around, she was told she was dying. Only days after that, she found out she would lead the people to a Promised Land she would, frankly, never live to see. And here she was: her feet solidly planted in the ground she never should have been standing on, the cancer that should have killed her already still a plague to her withering body, and the Scriptures that should have led them to a land flowing with milk and honey nothing but a book full of meaningless manuscript.

As the man next to her gently took her by the arm and led her towards a lone Raptor, murmuring something of concern for her, one more question arose in Laura Roslin’s mind.

Silently, she wondered if the day the cancer finally claimed her life would also be the day that the world would end again. But perhaps a scenario such as that was even too ironic in itself. Either way, the chill that traveled up and down her spine from the bitter wind was soon replaced by the feel of a warm hand on the small of her back, guiding her into the Raptor. He placed a kiss on her forehead, and in that moment, an answer conquered all the unbridled curiosity that stirred within her.

She watched him maneuver the Raptor carefully off the ground with great skill and appreciation for the craft, and she smiled.

Sometimes it wasn’t just enough to live; you had to have something to live for, and Laura was beginning to realize that perhaps love alone could conquer an aged prophecy and maybe even fate itself.
