I really like everything Mark Gatiss has done on Who so far so I was pleased to see his name pop up on the titles. You can tell he loves the show very, very much.
Winston Churchill, I liked, very funny, and certainly a *ahem* larger than life portrayal. The Doctor waving cigar smoke out of his way in the lift was one of my favourite scenes.
Amy didn't have a lot to do in this ep except for when she saved the day at the end again, in her small little way.I think she's very lovely but I felt no real connection to her in this ep, there was too much else going on.
The Doctor - I'm so happy the angst isn't quite as OMGANGSTY. It's still there, but it's portrayed in a different way and I'm happy with it. Giant spanner moment? = WIN. Glad they're still giving mentions of Ten, 'i sent you into the void' etc. Liked how the Doc kept making the peace sign, lol.
The Daleks - oh, good lord. Fun, but oh so not scary in the slightest. I've always thought they seemed a little bit campy but their redesign takes camp to the extreme. I mean, I don't dislike them, but I disagree with Moffat's opinion that they are more scary than they used to be. :P Better accessible for very young kids, definitely. But overall scare factor, no. Apart from the obvious lulz of 'please excuse me, i must tend to my duties', carrying cups of tea and folders everywhere, the Daleks pretty much bored me this ep. I am intrigued as to why Amy doesn't remember them though. Definitely gonna be part of a coming series arc, by the sounds of it.
The scenes with spitfires in space really made me happy. There was a lot of hope in that scene where even with his mates dead one pilot disables the Dalek light-beam thingy and the human race gets a win. That's where I love Mark's writing most. "Danny-boy!" :D
Bracewell was an interesting enough character. Bit alarmed that yet another character on this show wanted to commit suicide, and Amy's "trust me, I understand" seemed inadequate unless there is something we have yet to find out about her. Him remembering his forbidden crush at the end was sweet if not slightly cringe-inducing. :P The comedy with him determined to mope about his inevitable deactivation was really well done, I enjoyed that.
I am a little so-so about this one compared to the last two, but I liked it nonetheless. It distracted me from my Life on Mars angst-fest, at any rate. Until next week!
