The Europeans are the only ones to blame for the situation they have found themselves in with the refugee crisis, that was one of the points that Turkish president Erdogan made during his meeting with the EU. And he may have a point, because Europe had long ignored the drama with the millions of Syrians fleeing a war that has been raging for years ( Read more... )

It's not a single moment. The failure has been systematic. Europe has been turning the other way for a long time, hoping that the likes of Turkey would deal with the whole problem on their own. Well, they won't.

What should've been done is one story, but the more interesting one is what should be done from now on. Well, we could start with creating that security zone in Syria and North Iraq that everyone has kept blabbering about for months, but few have actually shown the political will to go through with it. In the meantime, we could think of a comprehensive program for relocating the refugees who have already arrived. But this time not put the entire burden on the peripheral countries because that's just not fair. Then we could begin thinking about stabilizing the Middle East by pressuring both the US and Russia to end this stupid game of theirs that they've been playing in Syria from a safe distance.

Lots of tasks really, I know, but ultimately, we've brought this upon ourselves with our continuous inaction and negligence.

As for Russia and the US who both think this is just a game, I'd reciprocate what Ms Nuland once said about the EU, and just say "fuck them". It's time Europe took its destiny in its own hands and stopped being the obedient puppy of this "great power" or the other. Because that position may serve others' interests, but definitely not Europe's.

Europe is NOT at the brink. Germany, even less so. "Winter is coming" - I did like that bit! It sounded almost as if the Whitewalkers are descending from across the Wall upon the unsuspecting, helpless Seven Kingdoms, and there's going to be a slaughter. Well, Europe is neither as divided (yet?), nor is it so miserable and backward as the societies in the GRRM dystopia. It's perfectly capable of incorporating what is shaping up to be a +0.1% influx of new population with barely noticing a difference. The whole thing is being both flamed up around the media beyond reasonable proportions (much to the delight of various xenophobic fringe extremists who are seeking to become mainstream), and not being viewed rationally and productively. People should just calm down, sit around the table, and start talking with each other, as opposed to at each other.
