Eh I doubt many of us are claiming he is perfect. He also opposes the ordination of women. He is however a giant step up from the previous few occupants.

It is difficult for the occupant of a Roman palace to be anywhere near perfect. The office of Pontifex Maximus is the moral equivalent to the commander in chief of the world's deadliest military machine. Those who strive for self improvement tend to eschew such responsibilities.

I am not a priest, but from my understanding entering the church is not supposed to be about self-improvement.
