The Ring's Hunger
The ring was hungry. Ever hungry for something Frodo Baggins of the Shire was unwilling to give. Frodo struggled to deny the ring that which it lustfully salivated for. For, it wasn’t food the ring desired to feast upon. It wanted to gnaw upon Frodo’s mind and strength. More than anything, the ring wanted to sink its teeth into Frodo’s soul. It wanted to devour until every last morsel was swallowed into the abyss.
The ring was a gluttonous pig, having already eaten more than its share of lesser men and hobbits. It had sucked dry the wisdom of Isildur. It had gulped down the sanity of Denethor without even touching him. It had even nibbled upon some of those closest to Frodo in his uncle Bilbo and the mighty Boromir.
But none had been so utterly consumed by the ring’s treacherous tongue than Gollum. For countless years, the ring slowly chewed upon Smeagol until the creature was nothing more than a regurgitated worm. His former self was lost somewhere in the bowels of the ring.
However, Frodo was not as weak as the ring’s former prey. He was of a different stock than the ring had ever tasted. Its teeth struggled against the surface, biting and gnashing, but never able to kill him. It even whimpered as it tried to digest the fragments of Frodo’s mind it did manage to swallow.
As for his soul, the ring could not stomach the light which was buried there. The light was deep inside of Frodo like a poison. It would kill Sauron if the ring dared ingest it. Thus, the ring lusted for the taste of the hobbit’s soul, but its aching hunger would never be satisfied.
