I was typing the word, "Ditto", as a comment just a minute ago- and it made me think about how some words or phrases come into being- and at some point the meaning isn't quite what it used to mean because the origin of the word or phrase is no longer around.
Ditto is one of those words. I remember dittos. I used to make teacher's dittos as the library helper in 6th grade. It was the last year of the ditto machine in our school. The school had had a copy machine for a few years, but the ditto machine hung around because some teachers were so used to it, and had the masters... and weren't quite up to speed on the new technology.
The one that I didn't understand until my mother explained it was ".... is the best thing since sliced bread" I'd always had sliced bread, so I didn't really get it. I didn't realize that there hadn't always been sliced bread and that it was very exciting to be able to get pre-sliced bread at the store.
