Five times Gabriel helped out Peter, and one time Peter repaid him.

1. Summer Camp

Gabriel heard the bell ring for dinner and ran towards the hall, assuming Peter would be there already. They had been split up in the last session, and neither had been happy about it. They had purposefully signed up for exactly the same activities in exactly the same order of preference but the canoeing had been so popular that two groups were formed, and they had managed to be assigned to different ones. Peter had waved him off sadly as Gabriel's group had gone off to the lake and now he was nowhere to be seen. Gabriel walked back towards the lake, wondering if Peter been held up, and it was just as he started off down the woodland path that he heard the sobbing.

"Peter?"

Abruptly the crying stopped and Peter called back with a shaky voice. "Gabriel? I'm down here."

Gabriel saw a trench on the other side of the path and jogged over, seeing his twin sat at the bottom, filthy, wet and crying. "Peter what happened?" He scrambled down into the trench and pulled his brother up by the hand.

"I was the only one who didn't tip over in the canoes, so those mean kids from Boston threw me in here. I didn't wanna let them see me cry so I didn't get out." Peter sighed, wiping away his tears.

Hugging him gently, Gabriels eyes narrowed as he thought of what he would do to those kids. "It's okay Peter, let's go back to the cabin and dry off, then it's dinner time."

This seemed to perk Peter up a little. "Hey, do you think there'll be more of that cake we had yesterday?"

Gabriel smiled, leading Peter up the bank of the trench. "Maybe. If there is, you can have my piece too."

2. Reaching Fourth Base

Stupid baseball, Gabriel thought. He was 16 years old he didn't need to be playing games, especially this stupid one which he didn't even know the rules of. Peter was fielding on the opposite team and he was clearly bored too, just staring into space while Gabriel readied himself to try and hit the ball. He wouldn't, he knew that. He would probably swing, miss and end up on his ass.

The pitcher drew back his arm and threw. Gabriel swung, waiting for the inevitable laughter, but instead all he heard was the thwack of leather on wood as he hit the ball squarely and sent it flying into the air. Shocked beyond belief he watched the ball go until his team mates yells of "Run!" met his ears. He started to run, making first base, second base, third...

As he approached fourth base he looked back to see Peter in a heap in the oufield, and it was only then that he heard the laughter of everyone watching. Only his forward momentum gave him the home run, as he was already trying to turn to get to his brother. When he him, Peter was rubbing a lump which was quickly swelling on his temple. "Your ball hit me Gabe...I feel a little weird..." Peter swooned as Gabriel caught him under the arms and tried to get him to his feet.

"Come on Pete, let's get you to the nurse." Gabriel sighed. Typical, he thought. The one day I get to be a sports star and I knock out my kid brother.

3. Prom Night

It was all his fault, Gabriel knew. Of course he didn't have a prom date, and Peter had refused to let him sit at home, so they had gone stag, together. This didn't impress Peter's on off girlfriend Catherine who was then left without anyone to go with and had just dumped him "for good" in front of their entire class.

"It's not fair Gabe, she hasn't even called me in weeks and now because it's prom she just wants me to jump. She can't expect me to choose her over my own brother." He sniffled and wiped his eyes on his tux sleeve.

Gabriel cuddled Peter close and left a peck on his cheek. "Listen Pete, let me talk to her, okay?" He jumped up and didn't listen to Peter's protestations as he went after Catherine.

Ten minutes later, when Peter and Catherine were busy making out under the disco ball, Gabriel felt he had made things right. Now he just had to prepare for the fallout when Peter broke up with her before he left for college.

4. Happy Hallowe'en

"Peter keep still!" Gabriel firmed his grip on his brother's chin as he painted the black stripes on the orange base he had already sponged on.

"Srry" Peter mumbled, trying to not to move his face.

With a few more strokes, he backed off and looked at his handy work. "There, done!"

Peter jumped up and went to the mirror. "Oh wow! It looks awesome! You're so good at this, you should do your own make-up cos I'll mess it up. I'll stuff your tail for you." He scampered off to stuff socks into the furry wolf's tail which was the finishing touch to Gabriel's costume.

Gabriel went to the mirror and started to apply the grey make-up with a flat sponge as Peter came back to watch.

"Why didn't you wanna be a lion like Dad said?" Peter asked as he started stuffing the tail.

Gabriel shrugged. "I like wolves, they're awesome. And I would look dumb as a lion." He added some white over his eyebrows and blackened the end of his nose. "There."

Grinning at each other, the two brothers wriggled into the bands of their respective tails and inspected each other. They were only eight so they couldn't go far, but no matter how many houses they hit they'd be the best dressed trick or treaters on the block.

5. Broken Bones

Gabriel kind of knows Mom thinks it's weird. So does Nathan. But he doesn't care. Peter is his little brother and he has a broken wrist because of Nathan, so he can just suck it. There's nothing weird about washing your brother's hair when he can't do it himself.

"Tip your head back Pete." Gabriel gives a few more rubs of the shampoo into Peter's hair before picking up the jug and rinsing it through. When the water runs clear he puts on the conditioner and massages it into Peter's scalp.

"Thanks for helping me Gabriel. Mom's really rough, she pulls my hair."

"It's alright Pete. Head back again, I'm almost done." He washes out the conditioner thoroughly and then gently squeezes the excess water out of Peter's hair. Grabbing a towel, he dries his hair gently and finishes with a kiss on the top of his still damp head. "Don't get cold Pete."

Peter smiles and hugs his brother with one arm. "I love you Gabriel."

"I love you too."

1. And the one time that Peter gave him a hand

Peter couldn't stand to see Gabriel cry. He rarely did, but when it happened it was quiet and soft. He didn't wail like Peter did, or sob. The tears just fell onto his cheeks unannounced. Peter ran to his bedside as soon as he saw the first tear run from his eye. "Gabriel, don't cry, what's the matter?" He inclined his little head and took hold of Gabriel's hand.

"It itches and it hurts and I can't scratch them." Gabriel had chicken pox. He had caught it from Peter, whose spots had cleared up, leaving him with just a little high temperature.

Peter thought for a minute before going to the bathroom and standing on the hamper to reach the pink bottle he had seen Mommy use. He ran back to Gabriel and perched on the bed, opening the cap on the bottle. "It's okay Gabriel, I'm gonna do what Mommy does and make you better." He squirted some cream on his fingers and began to dab it gently on his brother's spots.

Next morning, Angela was amused to find her two five year olds in the same bed, both greasy looking with a spilled bottle of lotion where they lay in each others arms.
