Author Notes: This story is going to be revealed, for at least the beginning, four to six parts per day. When I reach chapter divisions, I will post them as whole chapters. This is mostly because this was how the story was written and I find it to be more interesting that way.

There's an unsettling pause that ticks just a little too long, forces Hyde on the edge of his seat as his hand hovers over Gackt's cheek. You's taking too long to respond and that can only mean the worst...and Hyde could fight all he wanted but he'd just be thrown out for causing a disturbance or even ripping someone's throat out.

It's chilling that Hyde can recognize that as a possibility. Even more so that he doesn't care at the moment.

"Kurosaki-san?" Hyde tilts his head and he glimpses a part of You's back, facing the glass as he plays god for someone else.

"Don't put him in a coma." You's words, soft and dull, stood strong. Every single part of Hyde's body melts in an instant, the tense anticipation keeping him rigid slipping away just like that. He didn't even realize he wasn't breathing until as he returns to autopilot and sweet air fill his lungs. He honestly thought...

"You understand the risks, right? That he can't - "

"I know," You grits out and Hyde winces. Just from two words, he knows that You wanted Gackt in a coma. You believes that would be the better way for Gackt to heal. And yet, he listened to Hyde, for whatever reason. He's happy with the outcome, but for one minute, his heart breaks for him - You has, no doubt, been at Gackt's side since he was found, he's suffered quietly, feeling helpless as his friend lived through torment while Hyde hid and drowned his own woes in someone's else's whiskey. He's being selfish but this time, Hyde is conflicted - he isn't sure if he feels bad about it or not.

"We'll do our best then," the doctor murmurs. You quietly thanks him and the conversation is over - the doctor probably whisks himself away to the next patient, where someone might listen to his advice. Doesn't matter - it's for Gackt, he reasons with himself (it almost sounds like pleading). It's all for him.

"I wish I could blame you." Hyde whirls around to see You standing in the room now, leaning against the door. He's carefully avoiding Hyde's eyes and looking at Gackt instead. With his arms crossed, he looks like he's angry but Hyde sees it for what it is: defeat. Resignation.

Hyde swallows as his heart constricts with the painful knowledge that yes, it is his fault. "You should, it's -"

"I made the decision. Whatever happens..." You trails off, the words too despairing to say; the scent of looming tears hangs in the room but no one is crying yet. Then You looks at him, brown eyes ablaze even through the hint of water and says, "When he crashes, he'll need you there. Not me. You."

Hyde blinks. He wishes he could do more but for a moment he is stunned into silence. You's words echo in his head, over and over again until he can't take it anymore and then he reaches out, away from Gackt, away from where he wants to be, needs to be, absolutely has to be.

"You-san," he starts, swallowing hard before glancing back at Gackt. Like You, he almost certainly knows the man will crash again, that his heart will stop beating and that there's only so much the younger man's body will take before it gives in and shuts down. "I'm sor -"

"Don't say it," the violinist almost pleads, cutting him off, and Hyde can hear the way his voice constricts as the tears threaten to come despite his best efforts. "He woke up before everything went bad, just for a minute last night." He doesn't say anything else for a moment, and Hyde knows he's reliving it, remembering what it looked like to see his best friend's life seep away. "He..." the violinist starts, but his voice tapers off and he takes a shuddering breath, trying to stay composed. "Before he went unconscious, before he crashed, he begged for you."

Hyde stares at You, completely dumbfounded. It takes him a minute to find his voice and another for his mind to understand exactly what You said. There is no fucking way anyone would want to see their tormentor after an attack - not even Gackt, who's happy to face his fears of swimming but realizing someone close to you is a bloodsucker isn't something to face...so why...?

"What did he say?" he whispers - it's the only way he can talk without his voice cracking. You's eyes appraise him, searching for something but he doesn't let it linger. Both have waited enough times for the past few days - time is too invaluable now to be wasted.

"He wanted to see you. Guess that made one of you." The criticism is too obvious. Hyde recoils as remorse sweeps in. You has every right to be angry, but he doesn't understand and if Hyde did tell him, no doubt You would change his mind in a heartbeat.

"You don't under - " He breaks off with a sigh, eyes staring at the polished floors, away from You's sharp eyes.

"I don't want to." The younger man is still upset - rightfully so - and Hyde can see him bristling for a fight, but then Gackt gives a little gasp and they both turn to him, instantly worried as another sharp gasp comes from the man. Hyde hears You shift, ready to sprint in whatever direction the doctor went in but Hyde raises a hand before reaching out to Gackt, feeling as though he is threading his arm through the various tubes connected to his once-lover. His fingertips barely touch cool, clammy skin but it's contact, and he slowly runs his fingers back, into the mess of dark hair that frames the man's face like a black halo.

"It's alright," Hyde whispers, too softly for anyone to hear but a moment later, Gackt calms down, the soft noises stopping as he drifts back into relative peace. He can feel You's eyes on him, disbelieving, perhaps, but all he cares about is the man in front of him, the man he did this to. He can't do anything but listen to Gackt's breathing and be thankful that it's there, that it hasn't stopped yet; all he can do is hope and pray that Gackt doesn't crash again.

"I don't understand why you didn't come earlier," You finally says, breaking the uneasy silence that has fallen. His voice is still accusing, pained, but it's not as harsh and Hyde doesn't look away from Gackt for a moment, running his fingers through coarse hair for a moment before pulling his arm away, careful not to disturb any of the machinery tasked with keeping the man he loves alive. "I can't forgive that, but..."

Hyde's about to turn when You finishes his sentence.

"I'm glad you're here now." Without a word, he turns and leaves, a silent promise to return soon hanging in the air as he leaves Hyde standing next to Gackt, alone once again.
