Author Notes: This story is going to be revealed, for at least the beginning, four to six parts per day. When I reach chapter divisions, I will post them as whole chapters. This is mostly because this was how the story was written and I find it to be more interesting that way.
It’s all over the news the next morning, and the morning after that, and even the morning after that. Though the police don't release details, the media stations trip over themselves to report Gackt as one of the victims of a horribly tragic crime. There are three deaths, an injured rock star in a hospital, and a call for an ambulance for an injury the cops never found. It's the kind of story that the media only dreams about and Hyde has handed it to them on a gilded platter. It makes him nauseous and he quietly declines Megumi's offer for breakfast as he throws the paper across the table. It's been three days and it's still making headlines as more and more details are revealed. This morning's front page has a huge picture of Gackt splashed across the front with his subtle smile and shades, a picturesque beauty of cool and collected and the complete opposite of Hyde's last memory with him. He wishes he hadn't tainted it but Hyde figures he'll be wishing for a lot of things that are never going to happen.
Gackt finally woke up last night, the headline screams. Hyde has been fighting the urge to visit him since he found out, instead just torturing himself with thoughts of what Gackt must be thinking right now. Either option hurts.
"Go visit him. I know you're worried," Megumi says, sliding a hand across his shoulders. Her touch burns and he stiffens, eyes refusing to look away from a tiny hole in the tablecloth.
"Family deserves it first," he replies, voice made of sharp rocks and broken glass, "Plus, it's a media firestorm. I told you, I'll just call."
"Hideto - "
"I'm not going, Megumi," Hyde snaps and he's out of the chair and storming to the bedroom three seconds later. He's demanding she leave him alone in the way he slams the door shut and now he's alone, staring at the blankets sprawled across the bed, a sign of unrest. His floor is a mess, shirts and jeans thrown every which way. He can't say he really cares about any of it.
He sinks to the ground, head bumping against the door. When he closes his eyes, all he sees is that night flashing by in a blur, yet it always manages to slow down when Gackt is involved, twisting his heart more and more. He sees Gackt's tears, hears his cracked voice, feels him thrash when he is bitten with such clarity it's as if it's happening all over again. It plagues his mind and it certainly keeps him restless during the nights. It'll be a while before it will stop. Hell, maybe it would never stop.
His phone buzzes in his pocket and he doesn't have to check to know it's probably Tetsu's ten thousandth call or text. He turns his cell phone off and drops his head to his knees, letting out a shuddering breath. He just wants to be left alone - he knew it was a bad idea to come home but the sensation his disappearance coupled with Gackt's injury would have been too much. Now no one will leave him alone.
Maybe he should go away for a few days. He's scared - down right terrified, actually - of what might happen when he's outside society's grasps but it's better than cracking under the scrutiny of his friends and family. He just needs to get it out of his system but even that's hopeless - his darker side will never leave him.
There's a soft knock on the door and then Megumi's voice floating through the door. "There's a phone call for you."
"I'm busy."
"Please take it." Her words are polite but her tone is an order. She's always been a person of strength and even though she knows the times when Hyde needs his space, she's never let him push her around. It's a quality he admires but right now, he wishes she didn't have it. He's going to listen to her.
He gets off the floor and opens the door, keeping his eyes away from her face but his hand stretched out for the phone. She huffs, annoyed, but slaps the phone in his hand and leaves. Hyde takes a moment to inhale, swallow the lump lodged in his throat before he answers.
"Hello?"
"Hyde-san?" You's soft tone on the other end of the line makes Hyde freeze, would make his blood run cold if it wasn't already cool to begin with. His eyes widen and he stands still, as though he is on trial and is the accused, and he realises a second too late that he is, but by then he's already hoarsely whispered,
"Yes?"
"I just wanted to check up, see how you were doing," are the violinist's next words, and Hyde prays he's not reading too much into what he hears but he swears there's a trace of suspicion in the violinist's voice, and he can't say anything as You continues, "I know you're probably more worried about Gakku than yourself, but you need to take care of yourself too..."
Hyde almost snorts, would have if he wasn't so afraid of being found out. Take care of himself?
"I am," he murmurs quietly, trying to hold back every hint of the bitter self-loathing he holds within him, and he hears the violinist murmur something unintelligible to someone nearby before he has a chance to say more. He has a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, a sense that he can't shake and doesn't even try to, and his fears increase tenfold when there is another pause before You returns to speaking with him. He can't explain it, but his mind races and his heart seems to physically hurt as though it's pounding, and just a second before he hears the violinist's voice directed at him, he panics.
"Hyde, one more -"
"I have to go, You-san, I'm sorry." The words are mechanical, his voice abnormally even as he says the words, then pulls the phone away from his ear, clearly able to hear You calling for him until he presses the button to end the call, cutting the violinist off entirely and sinking back into despair.
You's question still echoes in his mind though, and now that he's alone, he gives himself over to sarcastic, mirthless laughter - because he did take care of himself, intoxicating himself on the sweet blood of someone he swore he would never taint with what he is.
Some promise.
