Side Note: For b_sim - inspired by a conversation we had about Gackt and what he actually looks like.

At night, Gackt is always reluctant to wash off the makeup, take away the mask of perfection that he always tries to have. He hates walking into the bathroom looking perfect, but more than that he loathes watching that perfection rub off into the towel, revealing marks across his face from an adolescence that was not as kind to him as most believe. He is always eager to have that part over and done with, and even now, years after he got used to being in the spotlight, he hates that imperfection, that reminder of the fact that he is human.

Hyde, despite his lover's hatred of the blemishes that mar his features, loves those little imperfections. He will never tell Gackt, but he loves being able to see the man behind the mask, adores his lover's humanity and has told him that his appearance doesn't matter hundreds of times. He's kissed at each little scar, at each miniscule flaw a thousand times at least, and he knows it will never truly sink in that no, he really doesn't mind that Gackt is human at all.

There's really no way to tell him that seems to make a difference though, and so one night when Gackt comes in from practice, makeup perfect and lips gleaming with a fresh coat of gloss, Hyde pulls him to the side, locking their home's front door so nobody will enter for the rest of the night and then he leads Gackt to the bathroom.

"Hideto?" Gackt asks, clearly uncertain of what the older man means to do, but then Hyde reaches for a towel and wets it, and the reaches up for Gackt and the soloist pulls back. "You know I don't like -"

"You have no reason not to," Hyde tells him, reaching up and beginning to wipe the coat of concealer and powder off of his lover's cheek, revealing the first of all those tiny imperfections as he goes. Gackt pointedly looks away, but Hyde keeps going, clearing his lover's face of that which he uses to hide himself from the world.

"You're beautiful," he murmurs as he goes, moving to the other cheek and standing up on his toes to press a kiss to the clean cheek, lips lingering on the tan skin for a moment before he resumes what he was doing.

"I'm ugly like this," Gackt retorts and Hyde sighs softly, continuing as he shakes his head, nearly finished with his task. And as soon as he is done, he sets the concealer-stained towel to the side and wraps his arms around his lover.

"Satoru. If you were ugly," he begins, and then one arm withdraws and reaches for a chain hidden beneath his own shirt, pulling it and what it holds out for the taller man to see, "would I have married you?"

Gackt doesn't seem to have anything to say to this and so Hyde continues.

"I know how you feel, but this is the part of you that's only mine, and I know I'm selfish but to me..." Hyde's hand reaches up to cup a cheek, expression gentle but firm as he pinks up where he left off. "This appearance, this face... You're more beautiful now than you ever have been."

Again, silence is his response and Hyde lets his hand drop to the side, turning to pick up the towel and then he walks out, tossing it into the laundry basket on his way to the kitchen to finish making dinner.

It's a quiet night afterwards, with Gackt seeming to be elsewhere, lost in thought, and Hyde lets him be, equal parts apprehensive and curious over both what he has said and what's going through his husband's mind. Even when they go to bed that night it is quiet, and in the silence Hyde drifts off quickly, deprived of the soft dialogue that often fills their nights in bed together.

In the morning, Gackt is awake before Hyde, which is normal, but what greets the older man when he walks into the kitchen is not the made-up face of a musical legend, but the very real, scarred face that Hyde loves and he pauses for a moment, stunned. Never before, even when Gackt is sick, has he seen him in the morning without some form of makeup, some form of a mask to hide his blemishes behind. Perhaps Gackt heard him for once, perhaps he understood?

Gackt notices Hyde's silence and crosses the room to pull the smaller man into a gentle embrace, leaning down to kiss him and when they pull apart, he explains.

"What you said... It made sense," Gackt murmurs, and takes a breath. "I thought you just wanted me to be comfortable before... I didn't think that you..." He looks away, ashamed. "I didn't want you to have to see these," he sighs, indicating the scars before he looks back at Hyde and the older man can see the uncertainty there, something so foreign he can't remember if he's ever seen it there before. "Either way, good morning."

It takes Hyde a minute to process, still not entirely awake, but when Gackt turns to go back to making breakfast for them he smiles and follows his husband, wrapping his arms around the man from behind and pressing a kiss to a bare shoulderblade.

"Good morning, beautiful."
