take it one step at a time

He wanted to be sure.

He couldn’t do that to any of them, but especially Dean or Jo. They didn’t deserve to have him say he was done and have it be like the previous time with Ruby. That was cruel and unusual punishment of the worst kind, and he needed to be sure that he was done. And considering he didn’t reach this point the last time around ( Read more... )

Sleep hadn't been easy the past few weeks. The bed that normally felt too small for two people, given Sam's height, felt more than just empty without Sam beside her. What sleep she could manage would be light, with her waking up every few hours, a bit unsure of her surroundings. As she rolled onto her stomach, she took in a deep breath through her nose. Stretching in bed, using her shoulders to push her back up a bit, and pull everything a bit more taut. Her stretch worked down her body, to her toes as she moved onto her side. Propping her head up on her hand she glanced around the darkness of the room, until her eye caught the fact that Sam's bag had been moved. She had been the one to bring him clothing, and she always put things back a certain way. This was not that way, and if something had happened... they should've woken her ( ... )

He didn't hear her knock on the door, but when he heard her voice over the roar of the water, he couldn't help but smile. It'd been a long time since he heard it without the iron wall of the panic room between them, and it was nice to be in a situation, finally, where he could actually reach out and touch her if he wanted to.

He tilted his head back into the water, washing out the last of the shampoo from his eyes, before he poked his head around the corner of the shower curtain, not even bothering to play innocent with her right then. He knew that was probably only going to get him punched, and that wasn't the reaction he was looking for at the moment.

"Yeah?"

She was quickly trying to put toothpaste on the brush, glancing down to it only for a moment so that she got the paste on the bristles, not the handle. When her eyes met the mirror again she grinned, seeing him actually looking good. More than good, he looked like himself again and it had really been a long time since she'd seen that. All those months of him having record highs paired with the bottom of lows, it was really good to see him - just as Sam. Nothing on his back pushing him forward, nothing clouding his eyes and making him see something she didn't understand.

Shoving the toothbrush into her mouth she turned around and pressed her hand to his cheek, the damp of his skin hitting her palm as she just looked at him. Letting her hand slip from his features she started to brush her teeth, "You should've woken me."

"I smelled like a garbage truck," he said with a bit of a smirk as he looked back at her. "Was gonna wake you up when I was feeling remotely human again."

He knew that she probably wouldn't have cared, but he hadn't had a real shower in weeks, it felt like. He wasn't going to subject her to that -- he didn't really consider that entirely fair.

Smirking up at him she pulled the toothbrush from her mouth, spitting into the sink for a moment, "Yeah I was gonna ask when are we gonna salt and burn your clothing? Because seriously - I'm not about to be haunted by the dead."

He chuckled a bit before disappearing back into the shower to finish getting clean. "As soon as I make sure I have enough clothes to get me through the week. Otherwise, they might actually just have to go to the laundry instead."

As he moved back into the shower, she turned to face the mirror again. Brushing her teeth and glancing once more to the pile of clothing. Moving closer to the offending garments her toe nudged at the pile of them, trying to gather them together a bit as she brushed.

"I did your laundry already, I've had a lot of spare time on my hands. You should be fine," Jo interjected. Turning on the water slowly, Jo cupped her hand under the slow trickle, letting the water pool against her palm until there was enough to rinse her mouth.

Tapping her brush on the edge of the sink she tossed it into the cup, grabbing Sam's brush next. Putting toothpaste on it, she moved toward the curtain shoving her hand, brush there, toward him, "Does Dean know you're up?"

"Probably not," Sam sighed as he took the toothbrush from her. "He's never up before noon unless he has to be, and he sleeps like the dead." Except, not so much lately, but he figured that Elle had ways of keeping him distracted when the nightmares hit. Dean probably wouldn't realize his brother was up and around until much later.

As he fished speaking her started brushing his teeth, only pausing when he had to to spit the toothpaste into the drain.

Jo leaned against the edge of the sink, nodding as he talked, listening to him brush his teeth. "House has been quiet the past few days, Faith's gone out a lot more at night though. Something's up but it's not like any of us are exactly having meetings at night to find out what."

Yawning, she stretched again, "Water hot enough for you? It's like a steam room in here."

Peeling her shirt off she ran her hand through her hair, then moved to shed her jeans and underwear. Her hand reached to feel the temperature of the water, poking her head behind the curtain, "Jesus Sam, are you trying to cook yourself?"

He smirked slightly. "Do you know how long it's been since I've had a hot shower? I wanted it as hot as it could go. Besides, Bobby's plumbing is older than most places."

His hand moved to the temperature of the water to turn it down, and hoping the hot water didn't fizzle out entirely. After that, he glanced back at her over his shoulder, raising an eyebrow.

"You getting in?"

Smirking she shrugged, "It's early, I just woke up, I have my teeth brushed and you're looking to use all the hot water. I think it'd be wise of me to get in now, before it's all cold water."

It wasn't as if she was planning on some sort of sexual rendezvous - though the thought could've been there for a moment - she was trying to be practical, and close to him since it had been a long time since she had been.

Once the water didn't seem to be the immediate first degree burn temperature she slipped in between him and the faucets, knowing that if he was in front of her she'd never get any of the water. Her hand pulled the shower head to tip down more, as she tipped her head back to wet her hair smirking at him, "Plus I'm making sure you're actually clean."

He grinned back at her, letting her have a chance to move between them, before cupping the side of her face lightly and leaning in to kiss her. He wasn't thinking that way either -- it'd just been a long time since he'd been actually able to, and he missed her. A lot.

Jo smirked into the kiss for a bit, before letting the actual moment take her for a bit, pulling in close to him. The water ran at her back, as her hand brushed into his wet hair. Pulling back she exhaled, a bit grateful for the heat of the water to hide the flush of her skin.

"I've missed you," she knew that he knew it, but it was more than just him being locked up those past few weeks. It was from before, and in a way she felt like she really had just found him again. Jo let her hand reach for the shampoo, pooling some in her palm before it goes into her hair, lathering up as she smiled up at him.

"I've missed you too," he murmured, before leaning in to kiss her briefly before starting to move towards the other end of the tub. He was willing to give her the space for her shower, but he wasn't going far. He just climbed out and stared to towel off.

"So what else have I missed?"

As Sam stepped out of the shower, Jo continued to wash her hair, scratching at her scalp with her fingertips before leaning back to rinse the lather out of her hair. Turning into the water she washed her face and grabbed the soap to wash her body as well as she talked to him.

"I think Chuck and Amy have some odd alliance formed, but that was before she left. Ruby is still MIA with Castiel too, he took her one morning and she hasn't been back. I'm sure now that you're out of there, it'll change."

The water was turning a bit cold, but she stood under it all the same, rinsing soapy suds from her skin. "Mostly it's been a case of how long will Bobby leave us alone before he comes back to see if his house is still standing."

Turning the water off she twisted her hair, wringing it out a bit, before stepping out of the shower and reaching for a towel to wrap around herself, "Pretty much business as usual."

He toweled off and got dressed as she talked, and by the time she finished, he was sitting on the lid of the toilet in jeans and a t-shirt, just listening to her talk.

"Someone did promise Bobby that we wouldn't destroy his house, didn't they?" Sam asked with a bit of an eyebrow arch as he watched her. "I mean, we do have some respect for his stuff." He smirked. "Just not his space."
