A couple days ago, I was using a slow but relatively reliable PC, and browsing Consolecity.com. It appears to be a site which let users buy/sell/trade games from pretty much any system, including untranslated Windows games. (I haven't registered yet, because I don't currently see anything I really want.) Anyway, that's when the PC gave me a blue screen of death for the first time.
Over the next day, I got a few more BSODs, even after such mundane things as leaving the PC on for just ten minutes. Made several attempts to fix it, such as using the free version of Avira to find problems, restarting with F10 and checking the hard drive, and using my installation CD and pressing "r" to look for errors. Unfortunately, nothing worked, and Windows stopped working altogether. And even while trying to reinstall, the PC froze up. Might have to find someone to help remove the old hard drive, and help me install a new one.
Once that's resolved, and once I reinstall the essential programs, I will make sure my independent games work. Nearly all the data from the PC was backed up, but just about every legit, non-freeware Windows game requires installation and verification. I'm pretty sure that reinstalling will be fairly easy. Indie games are made by one person or just a few people. Probably easier to deal with than large companies.
About two-thirds of my indie games should work with Linux. The problem is that a fair number are PC/Mac exclusive. And if I want to keep using RPG Maker XP, then I have to use Windows.
Until recently, you could rely on console games - concepts such as firmware, patches, and registration didn't exist. But the old days of "put in the cartridge / disc and press power" are fading away.
