I could make a real post! As I haven't posted in awhile. Or I could talk about silly things. I choose the latter ( Read more... )

Eeeee Junkyard eeeee. Have funnn!
It's my first time ! Yaaaay. I figured, now that I'm in my last quarter of college, this was my last chance to do it, so I should.

HAVE YOU NOT SEEN BABBAGE AND LOVELACE??? The comic that is. It is like a whole comic/blog full of thinly veiled fanfic about them and much fangirlish squee. ....Most of which is completely over my head because I just don't know much history about Babbage or Lovelace - but it's pretty awesome for the author's enthusiasm if nothing else.

You know... I think it has a lot more to do with not knowing the history, or not being willing to do the research. With a TV show, there's a very finite amount of "research" to be done - just watch the show. But for a historical figure, probably with many biographies about them... it could uh... take days, if you wanted to do it right.

...I'm just saying, nobody's really all that squicked by RPF any more. Or I've just been hanging around fandom too long. I admit to holding a minor squick, but only for living people. If they're dead, then they are practically like fictional characters to me anyway. So uh, yeah!

Gah, no, I haven't seen it! I guess this is my new obsession. I have just come to assume that nobody's written the historical fanfic I crave because I so figured Jefferson/Franklin (honestly, Jefferson/*. <3 Thomas Jefferson) would have been on the internet since the very beginning but all I've ever found is fics about 1776. Which is kind of the same thing, but like...second degree? I want it straight from the source.

I think you've been hanging around fandom for too long XD The only people from history I wouldn't feel weird writing fic about are the dudes everyone loves to hate. For instance, Andrew Jackson. I mean he is basically like the same personality as Isildur. Can't you just picture Andrew Jackson finding a ring of power and being like "Shit YES I am going to turn invisible and murder Indians in broad daylight, in PERSON"? Or fucking Marie Antoinette. The Very Secret Diary writes itself. (Weird that I'm automatically thinking of LotR stuff since I haven't read LotR fic in years.)

I digress. But I mean, I know plenty about Alan Turing...probably more than most people. And I would love to read stories about Alan Turing playing chess with nice young men and talking excitedly about computation. I just can't bring myself to commit anything to paper, myself, because Turing is as a god to me. It just wouldn't feel right. & I think people willing to put in the time to write this kind of fic in the first place mostly would feel similarly passionate/borderline reverent about the subjects they know best.

Orrrr maybe when I quit religion I developed some crazy pantheon of secular gods and just want someone to write a Greek style mythology for me to enjoy. FIC IS WEIRD

ngl...I'm more of an Adams/Jefferson and Jefferson/Hamilton fan, and they make more sense to me than Jefferson/Franklin. I've read good fic of Jefferson/Hamilton before. :3

Also I really like Washington/Lafayette, orz

Wasn't Hamilton like, actually gay? I think? I have like no comment on those ships or anything b/c I just don't remember my highschool history well enough. Fail, I guess.

No one was gay before the late 1800s because the concept of 'gay' didn't even exist! :P (I am really adamant about not retroactively giving people modern labels :P) But he might have had same-sex relations, yes, though he did also marry. :P

I should clarify: when I say "nobody" I mean, most people that are pretty into fandom and also on LJ. Either that or it reflects a change of journals and communities I read, or a change of opinion myself (oh man, my 15 year old self thought slash was weird. Wow have I changed.) That and I tend to read fanfic for characters I like... but to each her own!

I just can't bring myself to commit anything to paper, myself, because Turing is as a god to me.
I dunno... isn't the bible basically some glorified god fanfic? I mean, by that token, then surely you could write it! :P

And I do think that people would in fact be more likely to write things about what they love... isn't that the whole point of fanfic? Even if they love something a lot.

Fic is totally weird. And when you talk about it people look at you weird. That is like half the appeal, right there.
