Title: Tremors of the Heart
Pairing: Sooseop
Rating: PG
Summary: There’s an earthquake in Seoul. Imminent death is a rather powerful motivator, as Kiseop discovers.
Note: Since Korean has different levels of formality, both 사랑해 and 사랑해요 mean "I love you". However 사랑해요 is something a straight Kiseop could say to a straight Soohyun but since the ones in my head are gay like fluffy bunnies farting rainbows, they get to say 사랑해 which is something that one would say to a lover. Further translation for the end, 나도 사랑해 means ‘I love you too’.
The First Tremor
The first tremor hits when Kiseop is in the maze of corridors that is the backstage of the KBS building. He knows from drills that the first tremor is never the worst. It is the second that one should be scared of. Breaking into a dead sprint, he races back towards the dressing room where Soohyun is waiting for him. They are there for an interview while the rest of UKISS is scattered around various other locations filming. Upon reaching the room, he nearly crashes into a panicking Soohyun, who was obviously just about to go look for him. Soohyun grabs his hand and they flee down the hallway towards the nearest exit. They race against time, hand in hand, searching desperately for a way out of this nightmare. The lights constantly flicker on and off, making it seem like a scene in a horror film. Except this is reality and if they do not find a way out, they will be dead.
The Second Tremor
The world begins to shake again, throwing both of them to the ground. The ominous rumblings sounds that have filled the air for a while give way to the building actually collapsing. Rubble fills the air and the two must scramble to find cover. When the dust has cleared, there is a wall of debris between them. Through they try to dig through it or find some way around, it becomes obvious to them both that any more attempts will simply bring the wall down and kill them both. Through the wall of rubble, Soohyun can hear Kiseop's quiet, calm breathing. "Hyung?" Kiseop's voice is quiet, so much so that Soohyun has to strain to hear it though they aren’t really that far apart. The wall, while solid, is not particularly thick.
"Yes?" There's a pause and Soohyun can almost see Kiseop squaring his shoulders, readying himself. "Hyung, since it won't matter anymore-" Soohyun interrupts this statement in a harsh voice. He can’t bear the thought of not ever being able to see Kiseop again. "Don't say that okay? We're going to-" Kiseop interrupts back, but in a much gentler voice. "Hyung, please just listen alright? I need you to hear this. I.… I" Another pause. Soohyun is scared by the desperation he can hear in the other’s voice. "Soohyun-ah" The person in question starts at the lack of honorific. It's not that Soohyun minds, far from it. However, Kiseop has never dropped it before and the action sends a thrill of fear through Soohyun, at the future that implies. "Soohyun, 사랑해" Again, Soohyun is surprised by the choice of words. He tries to tease a bit and lighten the mood. "Don't you mean 사랑해요?" There's a silence and Soohyun is scared that Kiseop has passed out. However, Kiseop's reply has him just as terrified. "No hyung. I- I meant it. 사랑해."
Just as the statement is finished, the floor begins to shake once more. Any thoughts of romance or love are tossed to the wind as safety becomes paramount. Kiseop screams as the wall in front of him starts to give way and he yells at Soohyun to leave. Though Soohyun is reluctant he does eventually, but only after promising to continue the conversation after. He continues his mad dash for an exit, eventually finding one that leads him outside. Medics immediately swarm him and after assuring themselves he has suffered no outward injuries, move on to the next person.
The first person Soohyun sees who he recognizes is Dongho, pacing back and forth anxiously. When the maknae catches sight of him, he is enveloped in a bone crushing hug. “I thought you were- were,” the maknae sobs into his shoulder. Soohyun simply hugs back harder, at a loss for words in his relief at having survived. Suddenly he is filled with fear. Detaching Dongho from his body, he asks him if he’s seen Kiseop. When the response he gets is negative, Soohyun is thrown into a blind panic.
The Aftershocks
For the second time, Kiseop turns and runs, only alone this time. He's remembered a back exit out of the building but just as he's about to get there when with a roar, the world turns upside down again. Something hard smashes him on the head and his vision goes black. Kiseop floats around in the darkness for a bit, feeling lost and somewhat confused. He figures this is some sort of transitory stage before he really dies. In the background, he can hear a steady hum of voices. Those of the dead he supposes, though he hopes there is some of the living mixed in, as he hears his parents’ voice and is that Dongho-ah? It must be the living, as Dongho wasn't even with them when the earthquake hit. Kiseop is grateful for this chance to hear those he loves one last time. There's a lot of Soohyun, which makes sense. Kiseop does love him the most after all even if Soohyun doesn't know it. Soohyun seems to be pleading for something, though what exactly it is, Kiseop can't tell.
The grey is fading and the noise is growing louder. ‘The transitory stage must be over and I'll be going to whatever heaven there is’ Kiseop thinks. When the grey has fully receded and he opens his eyes, Kiseop's first impression is white. 'I guess heaven is in the clouds after all,' he muses. However, the second thing he sees causes him to panic. Soohyun is there too, leaning over him with a concerned expression. "No, no, no." Kiseop is devastated. Had he died for nothing? "You weren't supposed to die too. You were supposed to leave me and live." His emotions are a mix of sorrow, shock, and guilt. "I'm sorry," he forces out through the tears he can feel coming.
Soohyun just looks puzzled. "What do you have to be sorry about? You saved my life." His face sobering, he continues. "We thought we'd lost you, you know. Ended up you were really close to an exit. Just another meter and you would've been there. There was a beam that fell on you and knocked you out, but it protected you from the rest of the debris. You’ll have a nasty bruise but no one’s going to see it under your hair anyways." Soohyun pauses and draws in a long breath. When he continues speaking, there's a sheepish grin on his face. "I'm just glad I woke up before you did. I uh- had to be sedated after they pulled you out. So I was asleep for a while."
Kiseop is immediately worried. "Were you hurt? Did anything hit you?" He fusses over the other despite the fact that he is the one in the hospital bed. It warms Soohyun's heart, this naked display of affection and prompts him to do something he might have never done otherwise. Leaning over, he places a gentle kiss on Kiseop brow and whispers into his ear, "나도 사랑해."
Epilogue
While making out a few days later, Soohyun pulls a little too hard on hair attached to bruised scalp. He is summarily banned from touching until Kiseop is ‘fully healed”.
A/N: IT’S FLUFF COMPARED TO THE OTHER ONE. Also it's totally not like you couldn't tell what the ending was from the translation note. Not at all. And
