Nick and Greg had always been close. It had started as a brotherly friendship filled with good natured teasing. However, it became something more the night after they arrested Nigel Crane. Greg showed up at Nick's hotel room apologizing over and over again for printing copies of the newsletter as if it were his fault. Nick didn't know how to tell Greg that it was alright, that he was forgiven, but most of all that he could shut up. So Nick kissed him. It was barely a peck and was over before Nick could even register what he was doing, but it had the desired effect. Greg stood there speechless; it was the first time in his life he was unable to say everything that was whirling around in his mind. So Greg kissed Nick back.
From that night on they were always there for each other. They didn't need a piece of paper to know that this was for better or for worse. They could tell the rest of the CSIs knew and they silently thanked their friends for not outing them and therefore forcing them apart. There were two labrats, though, who were oblivious to the relationship and Nick and Greg decided they wanted it that way.
Both Hodges and Henry were known for their rather big mouths. If they hadn't been too busy fighting to win the fair Wendy's heart, they would have noticed how on boy's night out, Nick and Greg sat a little closer than "friends" do. Greg had wanted to tell their friends since it was now a friendship that exceeded the lab, but Nick assured him it was best this way, at least for now while either man would use anything as ammo against the other. They decided to wait until Wendy put the men out of their misery.
That had yet to happen by Henry's birthday and Hodges, Nick and Greg scheming took all affairs of love off everyones mind. This was going to be the best birthday Henry ever had.

The first thought Greg had after the crash was Nick. He turned in his seat to see the older man had already fallen out of the car. Greg pulled himself through the window and resisted the urge to run to Nick's side. Hodges and Henry soon followed and once the initial shock wore off, they all began to laugh nervously. Alright, so it wasn't the best birthday Henry was ever going to have, but he'd remember it for years to come.
As the men found themselves involved with someone who had a much worse day than them, Greg's need to speak to Nick in private grew. Once he was alone in the back of the restaurant, Greg excused himself and joined his lover. Neither said anything at first. Greg just brushed his lips over the gash on Nick's forehead and fought the tears that threatened to fall.
Nick relaxed and pulled Greg closer as he muttered something along the lines of "We're doomed to always get hurt in the line of duty." Greg laughed and reminded him they weren't even on the clock. "Then I won't feel bad about doing this," Nick continued as he slid Greg's shirt over his head and carefully felt the bruises, inspecting the full extent of damage caused by the accident.
Greg sighed, content, and thought about what Hodges or Henry would say if they walked in right now. It was like Nick sensed Greg's distraction and he passionately kissed Greg - the kind of kiss that always made his brain to short circuit. If asked about the crash, he would have said "What crash?"
Eventually they had to rejoin the group once they were satisfied that each other was alright. Some cuts, some bruises. They had both seen worse in the many years they spent in the lab. Nick would never forget the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach when he was told the lab explosion happened in DNA. Greg tried to forget how lost he had been while Nick was underground and there was nothing he could do.
When they returned, Hodges glared at them as if he blamed them for his misery. That probably wasn't that far off of an assumption.
"What took you two so long?" he asked. "Were you making out? Seriously, you guys were gone forever."
Nick and Greg couldn't stop laughing, their friends staring clueless at them.
