I, too, have seen Snow White and the Huntsman.

I did not hate it--I definitely didn't hate it to the extent that some people are hating it.

At the same time, I did not love it enough to be happy seeing it a second or third time. Which is annoying, because I really liked a couple of characters and found others compelling, and I'd like to see them again ( Read more... )

See, I was prepared for bad writing and ridiculousness - they were clearly trying so hard for the fairy tale vibe (mystical horse of magical purity chilling on the beach! etc.) - but I'm bummed we didn't get a training montage. This is a movie we usually get with two male leads, and I would have dug getting to see a girl go through the same sort of journey. Snow White spent 90% of her life in a tower! Forget the silly speech, why wasn't she cut down in five seconds flat? Girl never even pretended to learn how to fight. Training montages are completely implausible, but at least they're an attempt at an excuse. (That said, for whatever reason I really enjoyed the movie. It was just so PRETTY! And I loved that it had these two very driven female leaders who didn't necessarily seem to hate each other, but who both wanted very specific things that threw them into direct conflict.) Although it's possible she can dress herself in fabulous outfits via magic and just didn't want anybody to know she had magic until she stabbed hubby and took over.

Mostly: dude, why would you shoot The Forest Spirit. We went over this in Princess Mononoke. Never shoot the damn Forest Spirit.

I was also prepared for bad writing and ridiculousness! It's just it kept being subtle every so often.

We could have cut the whole bad-cg-homage to Mononoke and swapped in a whole series of training montages of her getting taught to fight like she means it--'cause lord knows our Huntsman fights like that, and he recognises that she's tiny and can't do the same things he can. (Which, I gotta say I sort of <3)

I agree, it was nice that it wasn't a personal hate that threw Snow and the Queen into conflict.

I couldn't reconcile the Queen dressing herself by magic: we're told explicitly and implicitly that everything magical she does has a cost, and a heavy one. She wouldn't do that to herself for the clothes she wears everyday, y'know?

(Second rule of fantasy forests: do. not. shoot the damn Forest Spirit.)
