& old dirt road, knee deep snow

First of all, I must mention that tacticons has passed 150 watchers *______* You boost my graphics morale liekwhoa when you pull crazy stuff like that, thank you all so much!

Also, I got Photoshop CS3! \o/ Not that that means much for this tutorial or any of the upcoming ones, but it's still exciting for me~

On to today's tutorial! Go from
to
, as requested by chyama! Uses Color Balance and Selective Color, so it isn't translatable.

I must note that this was for vgames_lims, and as such I was struggling to do something interesting with my icon. And with all the experimentation, I came up with an icon that uses looooot of layers 8D;; This tutorial is not for the faint of heart, to be sure. If you're still willing, here's the base, from this lovely shiny image of Jr. Try to pick a good, clean image with a lot of depth, preferrably a render for a video game or something, because this tutorial doesn't work on all images (as you can see from the examples below).

You should definitely duplicate your base and set it to Screen, 80% at the very least, to prepare for the steps up ahead. I'm not forseeing enough to know to do that right away, it was added after I finished the upcoming steps, just so you know xD;

This is where the bulk of the tutorial lies: TEXTURE/FILL LAYER TIME! Oh dear, this'll be loads of fun to follow I'm sure, but if you want the shinies...

This texture on Multiply, 100%, having erased the bits over your subject, gives you this
#001343, Exclusion, 100%, gives you this
This texture on Hard Light, 65%, again having erased some parts, gives you this
This texture on Multiply, 100%, having Clone Stamp'd out the line on the right, gives you this
#570909 on Lighten, 100% and #105219 on Soft Light, 100% gives you this
This texture on Multiply, 100%, yet again having erased the part over the subject, gives you:

I don't know about you, but I'm dead from all those layers xD It would have been too redundant to say all the texture makers up there, so they are respectively by sanami276 ( here), awmpdotnet ( here), girlboheme and girlboheme (both here).

I hope you're still with me enough so that we can move on~ xD Set another duplicated base to Soft Light, 100% and drag it to the top, This should help brighten up the icon again after having been through all those layers.

I don't know if I've referenced this tutorial before, but head to ckdesigns's tutorial here and use the Selective Color settings in step 3. Set the layer to 20% for this:

It just changes the colours a tad, and it will probably be more noticeable on your image. Next, duplicate the adjustment layer, but this time set it to Soft Light, 70% for more shinies!

And now we are going to change the whole look of the icon in one step. How, you ask? Color balance! 8D Use these settings ftw:

Shadows: -44, +5, +47
Midtones: -36, +9, +55
Highlights: +20, 0, +14

WHOA! What a transformation! %D You may need to change the settings to be less radical on your image; I made them fairly high because I wanted the colouring to be bluish/purplish really badly xD We're almost done, I promise! So take this texture by peachinparis (the set here is ftw) on Multiply, 100%. Erase the parts of the texture that are grainy (including the little swirly thing on the bottom left), but leave the black bar intact. You may need to rotate/move it depending on how you cropped your image. I came up with this:

It just adds a little bit of interest at the bottom, y'know? 8D One last little tweak for the road. Make a Hue/Saturation... adjustment layer and set Saturation to 21. Using the layer mask on the adjustment layer, I blacked out Jr.'s hair; it became too red from the saturation boost. But the rest of it looks fine, so we're done! ♥ Whew, that was long~

Other examples:

(The Totoro one definitely didn't turn out that great imo, but I left it there so you can see how this works on different images.)

I encourage you to go play around and show me your finished icons! DOOO IIIIIIT, I wanna see what you guys come up with~

If you like what you see, why not friend tacticons for future updates?
