Oh my. Apparently a girl with vertigo (the real stuff, not to be confused with "fear of heights") gets dizzy just looking at photos of really, really, really tall elevators. Ugh. Need Dramamine.

Parents stayed with us this weekend. D took treated my dad to the best seat in the house for fleet week (aboard a victory ship on the Bay). Not my idea of a fun weekend, but hey. I had fun cooking, of course. I'm an infrequent hostess, so when we do have guests, I get a kick out of planning (and realizing) the menu.

Saturday night was:
Bourride. This is a french seafood soup that is gorgeously rich and tasty, as it's thickened by aioli. I didn't make the soup entirely from scratch, as I used premade fish broth, and I didn't make it authentic (it's usually just whitefish, and traditionally the bread goes in the bowl with the soup). I made it with sea bass, halibut, mussels and shrimp. I was worried I'd screw the whole thing up because the aioli has to be tempered when added to the soup, since it's made with eggs, it has to be cooked just right to stay the right consistency. Turned out perfect. I reserved a bit of aioli to make:
Toasts with Saffron Aioli Spread: SO good when dipped in the soup!
Apple Salad with candied walnuts, dried blueberries, and herbs. It was supposed to be a salad with apples, but I forgot to buy greens, so I just made and apple salad with mayo and a bit of celery salt, and it ended up working perfectly with the soup.

Sunday morning:
French Toast Bread Pudding left in the oven for D to quickly heat up before the guys' early morning.

I was also going to make bacon glazed with orange juice, brown sugar and chili, but I forgot the bacon!

Sunday evening:
Dry rubbed southwestern pork ribs courtesy D
Sweet Potato Fries with sage crisped in browned butter
my Crazy Good Smokey Hot Baked Beans
BBQed Sweet Corn Oaxacan style (smeared with mayo then coated in parmesan cheese, chili powder and lime juice).

Rushed off to a photo shoot this morning while D entertained my parents and sent them off.

Next weekend will be entertaining my grandma, who is determined to pretend like she doesn't enjoy anything in order to make us feel sorry for her.
