Fife is a little town just north of Tacoma right on I-5. It used to be country but now it's more developed. It's 5 mi from Tacoma and 25-30 miles from Seattle. The Poodle Dog is in Fife and that's only place I've been to there.

Thanks. That was informative and unbiased. Though I do appreciate anecdotal comments, I need more of these. Mostly to make me feel like Im not making a huge mistake.

I don't think you are making a huge mistake at all. Once you get up here though you may scout around and find something more convenient (closer to Ft. Lewis). Parkland, Spanaway, and Lakewood are closer to Ft. Lewis. Lacey, just north of Olympia is also close to Ft. Lewis. You've got lots of options and having a place to live means you don't have to rush into anything else right away. There are little pockets of low rent semi ghetto all over Tacoma together with the kind of petty crime one finds in those areas. It is not a dangerous city however, and it has spectacular views of Mt. Rainer, the Olympics, and Puget Sound.

Well I have a car, and Ill probably be buying all my everything on post at Ft. Lewis anyway.
I looked at the smallish and Im from kind of a smalish town in AZ. I think Ill be OK for 6 months. Im sure the difference between portland and Fife may throw me into a bit of a spasm, but Ill get over it.
