I volunteer for the American Red Cross two to three times a month. Normally I work the canteen, which is the area you get sent after you donate blood to recoup. My job is to make eye contact and polite and pleasant conversation in order to avoid any bad reactions to the procedure. Its been proven that being spoken to by someone friendly and some what attractive (personality wise) can keep the bad reactions at bay. I also have to make sure that after donating you drink at least two drinks and have a snack and do not leave the area for 15 minutes, which should be long enough for a bad reaction to happen, if you'll be having one.
Its a lot of fun, as long as no one is passing out or throwing up. I get to have conversations with lots of different kinds of people, and I get to learn about new things. Today I met an older man named Philip. He is a retired attorney who just does mediations in his spare time. His wife is a retired family psychologist (when I told him I wanted to be a sexual therapist he didn't even flinch or bat an eye... he actually comended me... a 69 year old man.. commended an aspiring sex therapist), and his sister in law has several masters degrees, one being library science. We talked about my plans, and about school, and about books. I told him I addicted to books, and if I go somewhere and there is a book to be bought, I will. He laughed and told me about his two favorite books, and about his favorite recylced bookstore which was only about five minutes away from the blood drive. I wrote down the name, and when his time was up we said goodbye. 20 minutes later, he comes back in and hands me a copy of his favorite book. He'd gone to the bookstore and bought me my own copy.
One of the best moments of my life.
