My situation was the opposite of this. Around that age I spent a lot of time locked in my room, tying up the phone lines all night with a dialup internet connection. They accused me of being some kind of porn-monger, when in reality almost all of that time was spent learning things about programming, Linux (which ultimately got me a job that paid for college right out of high school) and maintaining a long-distance relationship with the person that I eventually married.
