Bobby always felt she was bravery than she allowed to be shown. He watched her thread a thin line of being a lady still, dainty, caring with a hint of innocences thrown in. On the other side was the toughness, holding nothing back always fight to prove she was just as tough as in any male, if not tougher.
Bobby at times found it funny she would remark how he closed himself off, how his anti-social tendencies scared her from time to time. Yet all their years together he had no memory of her speaking of plans after hours, never mentioned dates or guys catching her eye. Actually just once, never said again. He wondered if it was even true. He was too kind to push buttons like that. Especially to one he felt at ease calling a friend.
Bobby didn't make friends easy, he had countless acquiescences, old buddies, and connections but little he thought of has a friend. Alex was a friend and more than she would ever know.
As he sat next to her bedside watching her sleep, he reached forward with a tremulous hand to rub her own, vowing he would one day be as brave as her.
