Sephie Post: Eleventh Stats Update

Sep 11, 2011 02:29

This is definitely one of the latest Sephie stats I've done, but I don't want to waste any more time.

Sephie turned 11 months old on August 29. So hard to believe that nearly a year has passed. I know everybody says that about any major milestone, but some days, I feel like I'm still pregnant. Only then I'll see this miniature person next to me, smiling.

Sephie loved Kansas. I kept expecting her fear of strangers to kick in, but it never did. She enjoyed meeting new people, being held, and exploring the world through the various homes, restaurants, and attractions we toured.

She's 31 inches tall, so she's put on 10 inches in the last year. She is still very thin and fits best in 12 month clothes, though she hates shoes and socks and will kick her legs and pull at her feet until they're on the floor. We've got her on the medium setting of most of her pocket all-in-one diapers, though we're still trying to find the right combination since she's been springing leaks lately.

She is only about 20 pounds. We've been working on getting some actual meat on her bones, and have really been feeding her lots of purees. She's not yet interested in trying more solid foods, so we're working with that in the mean time. New foods this month include zucchini, brown rice, chicken, salmon, papaya, and Vegemite, which has quickly become her new favorite food. She still does not like bananas. She nurses when she wakes up and before she goes to bed. She will accept the breast in between then if it's offered, but does not usually ask for it.

She started crawling a few days ago, and earlier today, pulled herself up to her feet. I think she is going to try walking very soon, more or less bypassing the crawling phase like her brother did. She likes to crawl towards the dogs' water bowl, and she also likes to crawl short distances, then righten herself into a sitting position.

Sephie loves to be held and snuggled. She is very affectionate and likes getting reactions from people. Her favorite trick these days is to tilt her head back and rub her cheek to yours, kind of like Eskimos, I guess? I'm not sure where she learned it, but she does it frequently. She's also learned how to play bite and make noises by pushing her mouth against skin and blowing, so she does that often as well.

Speech wise, she hasn't really progressed much. She still says "Mama" and "Dada" but doesn't seem to quite know what they mean. In general, she tends to be a pretty quiet baby, but has been playing around with whispering a lot lately, and other vocal inflections to test out her range. B and I noticed she uses the word "Dah" to communicate the most. She understand sign language for milk, diaper change, more, and food, but the only one she can use so far is milk.

Emotionally, she's been a little more of a handful. Part of that is certainly due to teething--she has over 10 teeth now, and she has at least one more on the way. The other part is that her needs are changing. In addition to eating and sleeping, she now wants time to play, and lots of it. She likes Peek-a-Boo and hiding under blankets. She also enjoys chasing the dogs, though as I'm sure it will not surprise anyone to learn...the dogs do not enjoy being chased.

Sephie is now sleeping in her own crib. She did not experience any separation anxiety or any noticeable difficulty transitioning out of our room and into her own. She actually seems to enjoy the quiet time, as when we go in in the mornings to pick her up, she's usually playing quietly in her crib. She does not tolerate separation well in most other spaces, particularly if more than one person leaves at the same time, but usually does okay if people are only a few feet away. Her nightly routine involves giving her a bath, brushing her teeth, buttoning her into a clean sleeper, and reading while she nurses.

H is still her favorite person, and he remains the very devoted big brother. Unfortunately, the reason why he is currently her favorite person has just about everything to do with wanting to constantly pull his shiny blonde curls. H, for his part, is incredibly protective of Sephie and she is an excellent intervention to use when he's acting out.

The best thing about Sephie is that she hasn't yet reached the place where she wants to be mobile to the extent of being held. H went through that very young, and so it helps cushion the blow of Sephie getting older than we can still get in plenty of cuddle time. I know she's going to be on her own two feet soon enough, but I just want to enjoy it as long as I can until that point.

We have her one-year pictures scheduled for the coming week, so when I get those proofs in, I'll make sure to post some.
