Work Post: Number Crunching

Apr 12, 2010 21:05

Apparently, at work, we're going to start crunching more numbers. This means I have to increase the visibility and exposure of my work. Which would be great, not only because it's required, but people are still commenting and linking to my review of "Avatar."

While I suppose I shouldn't be complaining, I nevertheless regret writing the article. I obviously felt like there were issues that needed to be addressed (I don't care who disagrees with me, because I made a strong, articulate case for how the movie is sexist, racist and undeniably ableist) I'm still annoyed that the article generating so many hits for me was, well, about a movie.

Still, I regret writing it in the way that Gloria Steinem regretted writing "I Was a Playboy Bunny." It not only limited her options, but kept her somewhat removed from fully exploring her Feminist inclinations until much later. For example, she didn't go on to found Ms. magazine until 1968.

There are somewhere around 65 comments on the article (last time I checked, anyway) and even the comments that agree with me, well, wouldn't they be put to better use in a dialogue about any of the other articles I wrote, such as examining the phenomena of Afghan women resorting to self-immolation? Or even the Phoebe Prince case?

Sadly, I'm just not sure how to tap into that demographic. My "Avatar" article is still being linked all over the place (mostly at blogs that completely disagree with my contentions) but I have no idea how to really get the articles that really matter elsewhere, even if it is being addressed as a link from some blogger who doesn't agree with me.
