one in the people who wear the crown, two in the folk who keep the dead down

So you know that BBC 100 book meme that's been floating around for years? Just in case you haven't yet seen it debunked yet, the claim that "the BBC reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here" is patently false, (1) because the BBC has published no such piece, it was in The Guardian, and (2) because all the Guardian article claimed was that these books were popular. Since they are popular (and a good number of them rate the label of "classics") of course you'd expect to have read more than six of them. Well, it gave me a nice ego boost to think I was well-read, anyhow!

Day 2 - A book that you've read more than 3 times

This was hard but I'll go with Garth Nix, Sabriel. Let's just say I never got over my YA phase and leave it at that, okay? This first book of the Old Kingdom trilogy remains my favorite*. It's more or less self-contained, and I like the minimalist approach to magic. Also, the scene where naked!Touchstone falls into her arms is classic; if I was a better troper I'd look up the relevant trope at that den of procrastination and snark troperville. In summary, Lya + YA books = OTP.

*I do feel like Sabriel had a much more traditional coming-of-age story - a much more traditional arc in general - than Lirael got. Lirael was actively antisocial. Not in the "I am emo woe is me" teen angst sense, but actually deprived of human companionship. And she bore the scars from it. Sometimes I just want to send her a whole litter of Disreputable Dogs and have them lick the frown off her face.
