Triops longicaudatus

So in my long list of strange undertakings, I have started a Triops colony. They just hatched. Pictures forthcoming when there are bigger than a grain of kosher salt. I've counted ten so far. Though the big momma of them all has taken to eating the unhatched eggs despite feeding them. So I doubt she will have any more brothers or sisters hatching.

Triops are a relative of the horseshoe crab ancient and unchanged for millennium. Probably asking why I got these bizarre things with three eyes? I study better and am more productive when there is something living at my desk. Unfortunately, it is in a place where it gets no natural light so plants are out of the question. I thought about a Betta but I can't stand seeing them in a little tank. Instead I got the Triops and Sea Monkeys (Fairy shrimp, these have yet to hatch because the tank set up takes longer.) So now sits one of those little hermit crab tanks on my desk shelf.

Though I have a feeling this will not be big enough and a 5 gallon aquarium is in the near future as well as some coral sand (someone suggest a pretty color) and an Egyptian temple. (Though I secretly covet this 5 gallon aquarium set up.) And I want some live plants but I think I can get those from work.

Back to watching them swim around and eat. Amazing something so small takes all your attention.
