Excessive Expectations

Well, my dad just plopped a book down in front of me today, and told me, "I want you and your sister to read this." The cover was a vibrant red, and I was like, "Woah! Tone down the color, please!" After I got over the random color shock, I scanned its cover and its title is A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations: Do Hard Things.

It has a ( Read more... )

It seems weird that they would seemingly put so much stress on the "God" and "bible" stuff in the jacket summary if the book itself is meant to be more mainstream targeted. *shrug*

I have an aunt and uncle who gave me a book called "What Darwin Didn't Know" when I was in college, and my knee-jerk reaction was, "This is because I'm a Biology major, huh?" I don't think I ever read it, but I'm sure they didn't mean to be preachy in any way. (They both work for a Christian book publishing company, so maybe it was just a convenient purchase.)

Maybe the book will be inspirational or at least amusing some of the time? I'm still cringing at "rebelution..." DX I like combining words, but that one's too close to a typo for comfort!

Random Information (Because I'm Full of The Stuff):

My maternal grandfather's sister's step-granddaughter is married to Chuck Norris. They got a wedding announcement and I think an invitation, but they couldn't or didn't go. (I've never met him in person, but we joke that we should show up someday and be all, "Hi, Chuck! Your wife's step-grandmother is related to us! We're like cousins by marriage or something!" XD)

Did the Roman Catholic person use the word "universally?" (Yes, you used it right.) If so, that's a bit of a pun. The word "catholic," with a little "c," means universal. (What? I'm allowed to poke a little fun at Catholics, since I am one.)

I think that most of the audience is teens that have had the book forced on themselves by their parents. :D I'm part of that group. :P So, maybe the parents - if they don't really believe in God themself - are all, "Meh. Should at least have some good ideas in it." -reads a few pages- "It's okay. Whatever." -buys- x3

I have no idea how a person could get preachy about Darwin's work, really. I mean, evolution has been proven over and over again. I don't understand why people say that Catholics can't believe in evolution. I know about the whole Adam and Eve reading (I'm a Catholic, too. :P), but there was this one thing that I read that said something along the lines of, "The writers of the Bible weren't scientists. They were philosophers. Not everything in the Bible is scientifically accurate." -raises hand- Agreed.

Unfortunately, I haven't finished the book yet (I got sidetracked by studying and a book for fun reading that I checked out of the school library. ^^"), but I have definitely read some really cool stories in Do Hard Things. I've already bookmarked three that I really like. :) I was confused until it was explained that 'rebelutionaries' and the 'rebelution' was an idea they came up with themselves on their blog. I was like, "Typo? Actual word? 'Revolution'? 'Revolutionaries'? ...One Piece?" (I'm pathetic. Please don't rub it in. xD)

OH, WOOOOOW. That's crazy!! You should totally do that! Tell me what happens!! XDD I mean, what's the worst that could happen? ...Crap. Never mind. Your life is in danger now that I said that.

No, they didn't use 'universally'. And, now that you mention it, I forgot about that fact! I've been told that over and over, and I think it's cool every time, but I still keep forgetting. xD
