I was watching it from the beginning--I saw the post go up on my friends page and go to five comments, then twenty, then sixty-eight--then I went to eat dinner, and when I got back, it was gone and that stupid "Never mind" post was in its place. I was actually kind of excited to see it, because I'm in the middle of a dead week between the end of teaching and getting final papers to mark, and a wankstorm would end the tedium. So it was kind of disappointing that Elicia responded in a classy and funny way, instead of screaming like a fishwife.

Let's be fair here: they *were* making a baseless accusation, but they *weren't* making a baseless accusation of something that wouldn't be worthy of attention even if it were true.

The serious accusation wasn't that she traced, or that she used reference photos (although they did muddy the water by mentioning those things in their posts and comments). It was that what she presented as drawings were actually photomanips. Their evidence has been pretty thoroughly debunked, but if Elicia actualiy *had* done what they claimed she did, it would be a noteworthy example of dishonesty. I'm not sure what you'd call it, exactly--whatever the art equivalent of plagiarism is. Like doing a remix but not saying it's a remix, I guess.

(Again, I don't believe that she did it, but I'd file it as "important if true," (fandom important, anyway) not "ridiculous either way.")

Actually, never mind. I just looked at the screencaps of the original post, and they never actually say *what* they think Elicia did, in the original post. The sentence about "Photo manips take a lot of talent," gave me the impression that was the central accusation, but on a second reading, it doesn't look that way. I revoke my partial defense of the Evidence Seekers and add to the list of charges: they can't write a coherent j'accuse post.

Yeah, if she'd actually photoshopped her stuff, that wouldn't have been funny.

But that accusation is so ridiculous and obviously wrong that most people ignored it. Most people who said 'doesn't matter either way' were referring to her using photo references (because, hey, of course she uses those. Duh. Any artist does.) or to her tracing reference pictures.

Not only did they fail to properly state what they were accusing her of, their accusations were also either 1) completely and obviously wrong, or 2) irrelevant.

Also, making a public post like that without confronting the artist first, that's just not on.

I wrote a post mocking the whole thing, and someone I know from HP fandom replied to say: she couldn't have created these drawings by photomanipping ANYWAY. He tells me it simply can't be done with that level of skill.

And this guy, his own photomanips are GOOD, basically flawless. (If I had a lot of experience with Photoshop, possibly I could tell you how to tell they're fakes. But I don't, and I totally can't.) If he says that there's no way to do it, I'm going to believe him.

1. Making this post without contacting Licia first is WAY OUT OF LINE!

2. How do they explain the 'nekkid' pictures? They can harldy have been photoshopped completely. But I guess this would have been too easy a way to disprove their theory.

3. Licia stated more than once that she does use tracing. If you trace something it obviously ends up looking 'almost' like the original. I should know. I trace to. Lots of people do it. Am I a plagiarist too?

4. I LOVE Licias reaction to it. Very classy. :-)

5. The House fandom is really starting to get on my nerves. Can't we all just behave nicely?

Hee, the first Licia drawing I saw was this, and yeah, I did go, omg wtf! But that was more a reaction to how fucking good that drawing was. I didn't doubt for a second that she actually drew this, because I have a mother and an older sister who can do things with a pencil that you really wouldn't believe if you haven't seen it

Oh eh, I've been wanked before. Actually, I was involved in The Great FemJay Wankfest of Whateverthefuckyearthatwas... 2006, maybe?

(T'was fun. Lots of comments like, "Boy, beandelphiki is an idiot!" And then a few weeks later someone linked me to one of those EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG SHOWS UP wanks in which I commented...twice? Out of seven pages or so of comments, and people in F_W said, "OH LOOK WHO'S HERE OF COURSE, BEAN." And THEN - ooh, shiny thing! - they totally forgot about me.)

So they can wank me for this if anyone cares. :) My wank-cherry is broken! I won't cry.

For me, Licia did the opposite! If it wasn't for her and her wonderful drawings, I'd never have picked up a pencil and found out that while I'm certainly not brilliant, I'm not as crap as I thought I was.LOL. Well, I did. Confirm I'm crap, that is. But I DID attempt a drawing too
