House

This is my statement on my future involvement in the House Fandom, because everybody else is doing it because I think it's high time I let the House people on my f-list know what the deal is.

over-acted
Yeah. I give you that. But that's sci-fi. That's how it works.

lazily written, dully plotted
Either you had really bad luck concerning which episodes you saw, or you've never watched it. Because compared to House, Doctor Who writing and plotting is more than brilliant. And that's my objective opinion, since I don't mind fangirling a show that's badly written (i. e. House or even SPN, lol xD). You should watch Blink one of these days.

poorly produced
You are only talking about New Who, are you? Because saying that a show that's been running since 1963 was poorly produced from the first minute till the last, that's a bit... generalizing? Yeah, I guess.

I guess it really comes down to not liking sci-fi. Because if you don't like sci-fi, I can see how you would hate Doctor Who.

If you do like sci-fi, though, you can't really get past it. It is a mile stone in that genre.

Please can we still be friends?
Hmm, I'm thinking about it. I guess yeah, as long as you admit that it's your general aversion to sci-fi that makes you hate the show. Or convince me that you do have a point if you say that's not so xD.

Always happy to discuss anything with anyone at any time, remember? ;D

I'll happily admit that. All sci-fi dialogue comes across as overblown and cringey. Not that stops it being enjoyable, I suppose, but I couldn't take it seriously. Again, not that being unable to take it seriously is necessarily a barrier to enjoyment, but the idea that anyone could still be thinking about it after the credits roll is alien to me ;D

Yes, I'm talking about new Who, because I've never seen the older ones. I've had to watch the Eccleston/Tennant outings with my dad and brothers every Saturday for two years, so I'm well acquainted with it. I say dully plotted because ... well, each episode has some clever little twists and turns, I'll admit that, but the general concept of each episode is essentially the same. And Christ almighty, the script (while no worse than a lot of sci-fi stuff, and a lot better than some) is just awful. I quite like Tennant, and although his endless mugging makes me scream, he seems very sweet and funny off camera. But the script ... it's just shouting and cheesy one-liners, and to compare it to the subtle and mature (if occasionally by-the-numbers and predictable) House writing is mad (IMO).

I reiterate that none of these things necessarily make Dr Who unentertaining. But I just can't fathom how a serious fandom can develop around a piece of early evening fluff.

So, to conclude (;D), my general aversion to sci-fi plays a major part in my dislike, followed by my dislike of BBC family drama generally.

And the fact that I'm a staid, pretentious bore who has to seek intellectual merit in everything ;D

Okay, I was going to reply to this in a wink-wink-nudge-nudge-let's-agree-to-disagree manner, but then you wrote that last sentence, and sorry, I can't just let this pass. Because, you know, this is exactly what everybody in RL is doing wrong about fandom and modern media.

I went very tl;dr on you in this comment, and LJ won't let me post it because it's too long. I made a post about it. I hope you'll take the time to read, but if you'd rather just drop this, I can live with that, too ;).

Post will be up in a second, gotta turn it from a comment into a proper LJ entry first.

ETA: Here it is.
