Nifty language stuff
When you log in to your email account at the workplace, this text at the top of the page tells you "hello" in a different language each day. And the text is linked to this, which is really great and which I sometimes ponder when I'm supposed to be working.
Anyway, I know I've got excess fondness for Finno-Ugric languages, although I've not studied them much, when I see "Tervist" and think "That must be Eastern European, maybe even Finno-Ugric", and then today I see "Dearvva" and think the same.
I'm choosing to ignore the general blank stares, because this makes me happy (all meaning 'hello'):
Tervist (Estonian)
Dearvva (Saami)
Terve (Finnish)
Szervusz (Hungarian, to address one person -tok suffixed to address more than one)
You can totally see that they all came from the same source.
Also, I think I said "mex" instead of "mix" yesterday, which is really cool because if I did in fact say "mex" instead of "mix" it means I'm picking up on the Kiwi accent. This means, American folks, that the way the number six is pronounced here is, in fact, the way we pronounce the common term for carnal knowledge.
