Show, don't tell?

There's an interesting discussion of the "show, don't tell" principle on FFA here. I know I bang the show, don't tell drum rather a lot in my reviews because I'm so often faced with scenes where something would be better shown than told, but of course the opposite is sometimes true. The rules of writing, as someone on that thread (not me) pointed out, are indeed more like firm guidelines and telling can be appropriate.

The better part of three chapters of infodump, on the other hand...
