i've been somewhere like this before. i'm not so cynical now, but a lot of that good stuff is a gamble for sure. my conclusion has been that there're better things to base one's life upon. when all else fails, the best reason to keep breathing is to allow yourself to find a reason.

I know you haven't read a book for a long time, but I'd highly recommend
