Got the first baby gate up in the front room, separating it from the front door, the stairs, and the hallway to the living room, a bit early and all that, but better now than after the boys start crawling all over the house. Still need to put up a second gate separating the front room from the dinning area. Soon. Getting the first gate up was a minor challenge. The area I needed to gate off was 3 inches wider than the widest gate I could find (which was 12 feet wide). Ended up using a pair of 2x4s to make mounting brackets to take up the extra space. Mounting the brackets didn’t go as smoothly as I had planned. I had to shift them over from where I originally planned to put them due to wiring in the walls. My original plan had been to sink some anchors into the walls and bolt the brackets in place, but after moving to avoid wires the bracket on one side was now lined up with a wall stud. Nothing some ¼” by 3” wood screws couldn’t fix. They aren’t pretty… but I can always work on a more aesthetic version later. Maybe bevel the edges, sand the surfaces to a nice smooth finish, stain, and seal the whole thing. Yeah, I’ll get right on that. Just as soon as I have enough free time… which will probably be long after the boys have outgrown the gate anyway.
Once the gate was in place other things had to be moved… there was no longer a space for the stroller to the side of the door… but there is that inset on the other side of the door… If I move all the junk that has collected there and find a new home for the coat rack… So now the stroller sits where the coat rack used to be, and a set of wall hooks are mounted for coats, and a small storage cube holds shoes and a diaper bag right by the door.
