Aha! I’ve got it! The extra switch selects between the external LDR and an internal LDR (built into an enclosed LDR/LED module)
Instead of a ¼” panel jack I put in a ¼” switching jack (would be nice to find one with the same panel mount form factor) The LED control signal passes through the switch… with nothing plugged in and internal LED is used (part of the LDR/LED module) but with a LEDacle plugged in (will need to modify the LEDacle to have a ¼” plug on the end) the external LED is used.

This gives four modes of operation:

Internal LED / Internal LDR - similar to original functionality except no effect from outside/ambient light sources
Internal LED / External LDR - effect from only outside/ambient light
External LED / External LDR - default functionality
External LED / Internal LDR - no effect from any light sources.

For added fun I could put together different lengths of ¼” LED assemblies. Maybe one regular length, one just long enough to reach the LDR, and one stub that has no gooseneck at all, but is just an LED mounted right onto the end of the ¼” plug.

Of course there is a small trade-0ff… this idea doesn’t leave any where to put an audio out.
