writing update

The good: I typed 1726 words in one sitting yesterday
The bad: I was transcribing handwritten text from the previous evening
The ugly: I only added 612 new words on top of that

The good: the first major scene is done, and it reads pretty well
The bad: I need at least one, maybe two more big scenes before the story can wrap
The ugly: I'm tired and uninspired

The good: I jumped in and wrote a marathon 700+ words w/out coming up for air this morning. No bad or ugly to that. It neatly tied up the first big scene, and gives me a hook to lead in to the next.

Rough estimate is that I'll need at least 4500 words to tell the rest of the story that needs telling. That puts me quite safely within the submission guidelines, but at my current rate, I'll need 4 or 5 days to pull it off. Bah. I think that'll still leave plenty of time for my readers to get edits to me, and for me to bash out a polished final draft.

Whew. Not bad, so far.

Obligatory whining - I'm just not feeling the motivation of my characters here. I know why they're doing what they're doing, and all the history that's going in to it, but I don't think I've even begun to touch on it enough to convince the reader of the significance. I see readers doing a lot of head-scratching and going "huh?" a lot. I don't particularly care about this for my first draft, but I'll have some serious work to do come round two.
