The Cable Guy[tm] has just left, with the result that I now have internets (though gfefx is having some kind of issue connecting via ethernet, which I shall worry about later). XBox, work laptop, and the precious are all confirmed operational. He did say that he was seeing low signal in the building, so my throughput might be poor, but he opened a separate work order for that, they'll fix it Monday, and--important bit--I don't have to be home for it. Also, protip: if you get the cable service that has built-in wireless in the modem, you do not get to configure it; they do it automatically and remotely and you cannot mess with it. So, I may yet get a router to stick behind it, I don't know. The world really will not end if I don't get to choose my SSID, but then again, I would like at least the ability to see what's going on with my network, thank you so very much. Not this week's problem, in any event.
Not having teh intarwubs has made me tolerably productive on the unpacking front. Nearly everything is out of boxes, with the exception of sewing/reference books (need to buy another bookshelf), some odds-and-ends of costuming and sewing foo (need to figure out my containment. uleauleauleauleaualeau), and--here's the big one--all the tchotchkes, china, fancy glassware, etc.. For that, I need to come up with some kind of china cabinet or sideboard. This would be going in the dining room, which has a very distinctive look as any of you who have visited
missionista know, and I want it to harmonize. At the same time, I want something that is versatile and small enough to work in whatever my next domicile will be (so nothing too massive), and of course I do not want to pay much for it. IKEA would fit the last two categories, but nothing they have would look at all right in the room. I see a few things at Pier 1 and Crate & Barrel that are more like, but they want real money for 'em. (Let alone Restoration Hardware.) One could troll the various secondhand shops, and that might work well, but then how the sodding hell do I get it back to Inwood and up five flights of stairs? 'Tis a puzzlement. But, I can't sign off on the dining room til I figure it out, and that's frustrating. (Some can go onto floating shelves, of which I have several and my good landlady has several more which I may use, but I haven't sussed where any of those want to go yet.)
I also have a ton of stuff to bring from
sweh's, most of which I have already figured out where it goes, though the nine tubs of fabric are going to be...challenging. (SEW FASTER!) The plan there is to rent a cargo van, load up in NJ, stop quick at the Paramus IKEA to grab one of their ISO-9000 standard bookshelves and a tiny computer desk, and drive in. So, I will be asking for helpers. Will pay in food and booze. If we have enough, then we can have 1-2 people on each flight of steps, and no one has to think of a fifth floor walkup.
More immediately, I need to procure a real stepladder and a drill, so that curtains (and floating shelves, when I get there) may be properly hung. I am sure the across-the-street neighbors are enjoying the show, but meh.
My TV is ridiculously small in this space. I believe I shall be laying out for something a bit more size-appropriate. Though then the question is, do I just stick it on the battered ol' coffee table, or do I get an actual furniture unit with shelves and drawers, which will help other storage issues?
I have not even begun to address other media issues (Roku boxes, mediabeasts, wireless radio systems, etc). Or where my phone should live on charge so I can hear it no matter where I am in the apartment. #firstworldproblems
I find myself somewhat paralyzed by choices for what to do on a beautiful Saturday now that I am no longer waiting for Godot. I'll be going out to
sweh's around teatime, but until then, I could:
* explore Inwood Hill Park
* schlep down to BB&B or Gracious Home or Container Store to get kitchen garbage cans and things to put things in
* schlep down to Home Despot to get a stepladder and drill (I have no idea what drill to get) (yes, I would like to shop locally but the local hardware store burned down in January)
* go up to the Indian Road Cafe and have a really damn good cup of coffee and start becoming known as A Regular
* go to Jeff & Lorree's for an afternoon symposium on How To Display At A&S Exhibits--which, I mean, it's not as if I'm not surrounded by Laurels, but a different perspective would be interesting
* walk the parts of the neighborhood I haven't seen yet, like down at the foot of Seaman where the aikido dojo and the bike store and stuff are
* do laundry (no.)
* continue to nibble away and rearrange the stuff already here, for greater efficiency so that more stuff can be absorbed
Whichever thing occurs, I MUST drop off my living room curtains at one of the local dry cleaners, as they are horrifically skanky at the top, and I want them clean before I hang them again.
