Title: The Pottermore Network
Fandom: The Social Network
Characters: Eduardo/Mark pairing, Dustin, and Chris.
Rating: T
Warnings: I have no idea. I'll ask Kelly. WARNING: A WILD DUSTIN APPEARS.
Spoilers: Uh... The Social Network? I think?
Summary: Mark hacks into Pottermore to see what house he's in. Dissatisfied with the results, he crashes the site, and calls on Eduardo to help him make improvements. Eduardo helps, but not in the way Mark expects.
Notes: I know nothing about coding, so if anyone does and wants to correct me on what I've said, please feel free. Also: As it's a "choose your own adventure" type story, the story-line of each individual house is extremely similar, though the details are different. This is on purpose, because, well... It's Mark and Eduardo.
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. I do not own Pottermore. I do not own The Social Network. This is a work of fiction, and the characters described herein are based on the fictional representation of real people, to whom I have no affiliation or connection with. If you got here via searching your name by some means, I would advise you to go back and go to a different place. You should try YouTube! They have kittens there!
Dedication: This was inspired and encouraged by Julia and Kelly. I thank you both dearly, because I probably wouldn't have written it had you both not insisted. I love you both. TEAM PRIDE, YEAH.
It’s close, he guesses, but not quite. He never really saw himself as a Ravenclaw. He’s smart, sure, and clever, but if he were smart enough for Ravenclaw, then he wouldn’t have done some of the things he has. He never would’ve needed to hurt Erica that way, or hurt Eduardo like he did. He would’ve known better than to say the things he did, or make some of the choices he made.
He just always figured he’d be a Slytherin. Slytherin, where they’re ambitious and clever and put success before everything else.
Chris is the first to find him, staring at his computer screen like it’s suddenly decided to breakdance. Dustin comes in after, eager to see the results.
“You’re in Ravenclaw?” Chris asks, bringing a chair to sit behind him. Dustin sits on a clear space on the desk, and examines the entire page.
“That makes sense.” Dustin says, using the mouse to play around with all the things in the background.
Mark isn’t satisfied. He says as much, and furrows his brow when Dustin laughs at him. “Why is that funny? I’m not satisfied with this result.”
“Mark, you’re really smart. I would’ve thought you’d like being in the smart house.” Chris says. He doesn’t quite get it. It makes perfect sense to him and Dustin, but it’s not the result Mark thinks is right for him.
He opens up the site’s code and starts putting figures in to crash it. Within minutes, it begins to glitch, and by the time Chris and Dustin realize what's happening, it’s too late for them to do anything to stop him.
Mark opens a new page while Dustin mouths nonsense words and looks vaguely upset. Chris just looks angry. “Mark, you can’t crash an entire website just because you don’t like what they’ve said.”
“I just did. And it’s obviously a wrong code. I just need to write a new one, so it’s more accurate and everyone will get their perfect house.” Mark begins to code, and doesn’t notice that they’ve left until his cell phone rings by his left hand. It’s Eduardo’s ringtone.
He stops typing and answers it immediately. “Eduardo. Hi.”
It’s been a little over two years since he and Eduardo started talking again. They’d been civil towards each other, but after a few meetings and events, he’d figured out that he was going to have to make a move to reconciling. So he’d written a message out in binary and emailed it to Eduardo, one morning. "01001001 00100000 01110111 01100001 01110011 00100000 01110111 01110010 01101111 01101110 01100111 00101110." I was wrong. "01001001 00100111 01101101 00100000 01110011 01101111 01110010 01110010 01111001 00101110." I’m sorry.
The next day, he’d gotten a phone call and they’d slowly started to get to know each other again. He relearned his best friend, and made sure to remember important things, the things Eduardo would want him to remember. He never once forgot an important date, and on the “anniversary” of the dilution, he’d sent the same binary message to him. That night, he’d explained everything over the phone, and they debated over each point, but came to an understanding. He’d slept better that night than he ever had in his life.
“Mark, Chris just sent me a text message telling me to make you stop. Make you stop what?” Eduardo asks. It’s late in Singapore, or maybe early, and he sounds like he’d been asleep.
“I hacked into Pottermore and was sorted into Ravenclaw. Then I crashed the website.” Mark replies. He stands up and moves over to his couch, devoting all his attention to this conversation.
“Why-- you-- okay. You hacked it, used it, then crashed it. I thought you wanted to be in Ravenclaw, Mark.” Eduardo still sounds tired, but less asleep.
“I shouldn’t be in Ravenclaw, though. I’m not smart enough for it,” Mark says. “If I were, I would’ve been smart enough to keep us together, instead of breaking everything apart.”
There’s shuffling on Eduardo’s end of the line. He’s probably repositioning himself in bed, getting comfortable for this conversation. “Mark, what are you talking about?”
“If I were smart enough to be in Ravenclaw, I would’ve been able to see past Sean’s bullshit, and see that I was hurting Erica, and see that I was hurting you. If I were smart enough for Ravenclaw, I wouldn’t have lost you.” It’s only the fact that Eduardo probably won’t remember this conversation that makes him be so honest.
“Mark, I don’t-- hold on, let me sit up. You didn’t lose me, Mark. Not forever. You and I, we got sidetracked, but we got it back, and we’re doing well, right? You’re so smart, Mark. You created such a great thing, had such a great idea, and you made it work. You keep growing and creating and it’s a beautiful thing. Why… why don’t you think you’re smart enough for Ravenclaw, when you’re everything Ravenclaw is?” Eduardo asks.
“I… If I were smart enough for Ravenclaw, I would’ve done things different. A lot different.” Mark says. He thinks, anxiously, that he would’ve found a way to keep Eduardo and Facebook, would’ve been able to figure out how to make them both work.
“Mark, you made some choices, and I think, now, that they had to be made for us to be okay. We both know each other, now. We know our limits, and we’re better for it. We can talk and listen to each other and we can make it all work. It was a tough price to pay, but it’s worth it, right?”
“I should’ve been able to find a way to keep you.” Mark says. He lies down on his couch and covers his eyes with his arm.
“…but you have me now, Mark. I may be in Singapore, but we’re so much closer now than we were before.”
Mark sighs when he realizes that Eduardo is right. “I’m going to have to fix this Pottermore thing, right?”
“You got it.” Eduardo laughs. It’s semi-hysterical, since he’s still partly asleep, but it’s wonderful to hear.
“Okay. I’ll fix it now. Go back to sleep, Wardo.” Mark stands and goes to his computer, ready to undo all the code he’s written into it.
“Wait, no, don’t hang up. You probably haven’t slept in forever. I’ll wait until you’re done.”
Mark undoes the code, and watches as the site goes back up. There’s a cheer from the main room, where all his programmers are supposed to be working. Half of them are on Pottermore.
Mark closes the blinds to his office and settles back into his couch. “Okay, I’m done. What now?”
Eduardo hums and chuckles into the phone. “Now, we’ll take a nap. Then when we wake up, we’ll Skype or something, and work out how to get me into Pottermore easily so I can be sorted.”
“You’ll probably be a Hufflepuff.” Mark murmurs.
“Probably, yeah.”
They fall asleep that way, breathing in tandem. Weeks later, Mark will go to Singapore and wind up staying a few weeks longer than either of them had expected.
