It really doesn't matter whether the object of your affection is gay or straight. There were, no doubt, others who found your gender appropriate, but who still weren't interested in you.
I'm thinking of someone from high school whom I'll probably always be very much attracted to. I last saw her at one of the few reunions I've been to, and we had a chance to talk. She'd always known she was gay. I didn't know. But we were friends then, and while we haven't kept in touch, we're still friends.
