spring-weather commutes

Wed Apr 5 10:15:30 EDT 2017

It got up to 80°F/26.7°C yesterday, 82°F/27.8°C on my bike. It's cooler today, 65°F/18.3°C at the moment.

Thursday 11:21

We're having a thunderstorm. It's raining pretty hard. It should pass through and clear up in time for me to bike to work, but I guess I'll be off the C&O Canal towpath for the next couple of days.

Assuming that the Roosevelt Island parking lot is still under construction, with the mulch-path detour, that won't be rideable either, and I'll have to take Key Bridge and go through Georgetown - my shortest, but traffic-est route.

Thursday 13:52

I thought the weather was done, but we've just had about 10 minutes of hailstorm. I didn't see anything bigger than a marble, but they were coming down like rain. There's still lots of thunder. [later] Captured a weather-RADAR image. Everything is moving to the northeast. You can see DC in a pocket of calm, with the bulk of the storm passed, but a very intense band approaching.

I'm surprised that the camera battery keeps running down, but I have to remind myself that when its GPS function is on there's a constant drain from that. (I'm assuming I (or my archivists) may someday find value in having my photos geo-tagged....)

On the good side, Trump convinced Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet at Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, so there shouldn't be any traffic detours around the White House to mess up my commute today.

Thursday 18:00

I got soaked coming to work. It was sunny when I left home, but I could see dark clouds behind me, getting closer. The rain started in Georgetown, and got worse as I continued. 56°F/13.3°C is chilly when you're wet; add in some wind. I do change clothes at work (unless I get there so late that it doesn't matter). It felt good to get into dry clothes today.

Friday 01:05

I just heard that a dozen cherry trees were uprooted by the storms yesterday. ☹ I stopped on my ride in to clear some branches from a trail.

Friday 20:30

[Do I write the same posts every spring?]

The weather's still crazy this week. There were a couple of days over 80°F/27°C, and today it was 50°F/10°C when I left home.
I had a stiff headwind riding home uphill last night. I had a stiff tailwind coming to work today. I earned it last night.

All my clothes got wet coming in yesterday; I got caught by rain even after waiting out 2 bands of storms and leaving home in bright sunshine. My light jacket, which doesn't stop much water, is the only thing that had dried out by the time I left the office last night.

It should be getting warmer again the next couple of days, and be over 70°F/21°C again Sunday.

Friday 22:30

Stiff headwinds again coming home tonight. Unfair. ☹
