Ubuntu Long-Term-Support release 16.04.1 (Xenial Xerus) has been available for a while. I'm running 14.04 LTS. The upgrade schedule was generally every 6 months, with LTS releases every 18 months. Security updates are available for the current release, but the LTS releases have updates for 5 years(!), so if you don't want to upgrade as frequently, you can go with the LTS upgrades. It looks like the LTS schedule has slipped to 24 months. The release nicknames have been less commonly-known animals, running alphabetically. (The xerus is an African ground squirrel.) They're getting to the end of the alphabet, so I'm wondering whether they've got 26 more animals lined up or they're going to switch to something else.

This (3-day) weekend would be a good time to upgrade. I started a backup before I went to bed, and it's finished. I'll let the upgrade run this afternoon.

The Ubuntu upgrade is still running. The first start quit for lack of space in /boot. I needed to delete an old kernel to make more room. I'm repeatedly annoyed about this, because I have a 1TB (yes) disk, and Ubuntu's initial install decided on its own how big to make /boot. There's no reason it couldn't have been bigger than the 236MB it picked. The 2nd run (still in progress) showed lots of error messages about installing packages that are dependent on other packages that are planned for removal. What kind if sense does that make?

Saturday 17:49

The Ubuntu upgrade has completed. I'm still seeing errors at boot, so whatever's been causing those problems was not resolved.

Saturday 18:15

It's delightfully temperate outside (80°F/26.7°C and 45% humidity). I should have spent the afternoon out on the deck instead of in the basement. Maybe the next couple of days will be like this? Highs forecast in the upper 70s tomorrow and lower 80s Monday - about like today. Doesn't look like we're going to get rain from ex-hurricane Hermine; it's a bit out to sea.

Saturday 19:40

I'll have to bring a box fan out tomorrow to keep the mosquitoes away. (They need still air.) I've got most of my body covered, but they're still going for the wrists/hands and neck. ☹
