Pennsic VL - Friday, War Week

Aug 12, 2016 07:59

Fri Aug 12 07:59:03 EDT 2016

It's earlier than I need to be up, but this seems to be my body's schedule for now.
I'm charging my own camera battery now. The laptop battery is at 16%, and will probably need 1 more charge before we all leave.

Friday 08:25

I had to go farther than usual to find an unoccupied porta-potty, but this is later than I usually get up. I was hoping they wouldn't be as busy today since people have been leaving.
dlgenn and Colleen are leaving today ☹; DGlenn has a mundane gig this weekend.

Friday 09:43

The recording of the recorders last night before the KWC concert(s) is pretty good. The performance is not so great, but it is faithfully recorded. I haven't played enough yet to hear whether the adult choirs overshot the levels that were set, but I expect the kid's choirs will be fine on the recording.

Time to leave for class....
DateTimeLengthLocationClassInstructorDescription 08-1210:001.0 hrA&S 6Making a Period Kit, Armor, or Camp for $100Jon LackpennyHistorical authenticity is often seen as being too expensive to be achievable. This class will explore how to look more period for less money. Examples will be given from multiple periods on how to create a suit of clothes, a basic encampment, or a suit of armor for the lists, for around $100 each. Standard of authenticity for all of the above will be such that a person wearing the kit and standing in the camp could be photographed for an educational book about the Middle Ages. For example, sewing machine stitches are fine but flashlights are not.

This concert presents the songs and stories of SCA and Midrealm history chosen for illumination in this remarkable achievement.

Friday 19:42

The Period Kit class did not cover armor or camp, but it was still a very good class. I've been to a couple of Jon Lackpenny's classes before.

The Germanic lyre roundtable was cancelled.

I came back to camp for lunch.
eftychia and Colleen loaded and headed out, later than planned but not terribly so. But this is a Friday, and they could hit bad traffic getting into Baltimore or the DC area (Colleen).

The Madrigal Sing-Along was quite good. We struggled on the first piece, which was unfamiliar to many (including me) and we were doing transposed. The pieces that I could read (or already knew) went much better, and some were quite good. We had one person struggling, but he was quiet, not disruptive. (He was (attempting) singing the tenor line with me at first, and then switched to bass when a 2nd strong bass arrived.)

After that I went "shopping"; '"'shopping'"' because I wasn't really expecting to buy anything. I saw Barb, the bass recorder player from Texas here for her first Pennsic; she sells Barb's Garb in a shared booth. I did buy one of Mol Sotherden's hair clips (for anniemal) and a small, sturdy glass bottle that can be hung from my belt.

And I had a rather personal chat with a vendor I've had a crush on in the past. I didn't realize she considered herself an introvert. She and her partner have applied to adopt a deaf child (Her partner works with the deaf and hearing impaired, and she is learning ASL.), and she thinks it likely that the child will probably not be the same race as they. I will try to put her in contact with
aome, who has experience with inter-cultural options. We (my vendor friend) are both apalled by Trump's political progress, and what his election might mean those who are not white, male, and heterosexual (and Christian). She also knows Siri Toivosdotter (KWC and KWRE director), but mundanely. (Good thing Siri has been putting both her names on the music she compiled for KWRE and the dance bands, so I recognized the other name.) Soul baring seems to be becoming a new Pennsic tradition. (It was to Erin last year.)

After that I headed back to camp, and learned that dinner was ready. Then I also realized it was past 18:00, and I was missing Calf to Codex, A Concert. I headed back to the University. I wouldn't really have called it a concert. There were some readings, that I think were from the book, and there were some bard songs that seemed to be familiar to the rest of the audience. The audience was very small (many people are already gone, and many of the rest are packing), and they seemed to be an inside group of bards and documenters.
Apparently the book has a(n open-source) CreativeCommons license, written in oak-gall ink.

I had the laptop on the charger while I was at Calf to Codex. It was below 10%. When I turned the laptop on after dinner the inverter complained about the 12v battery voltage with the extra load, so the monster battery is getting depleted. I don't think the solar charging has amounted to anything significant this Pennsic.

I'm listening to the KWRE/Collegium/KWC concert recording. The little kids are amusing, singing medieval tunes with such enthusiam....

Friday 21:13

I've finished a first listening to the Thursday-evening concert. It's still pretty intense; not as intense as singing the concert was, but still very engaging. As always, there's many things you hear from the mic position that you don't hear from wherever you are on stage in the chorus. I heard lots of things that should have been fixed - wrong notes, wrong accidentals; things that I never heard in the rehearsals. I wonder whether some had been correct before and reverted at the last minute, or had they always been wrong and I couldn't hear them from where I was? The basses were sometimes muddy; did they have added singers who'd missed rehearsals where things were fixed?

I didn't have the music running through my head today as much as I have previous years. I think that may mean I knew the music better this year; this ongoing replay days later is part of the learning process, and there weren't spots where I was uncertain about what came next.

The laptop's still been charging when I'm not using it (pushing the load past the inverter's limit). My recharging capacity has been sufficient for this war.

Friday 23:55

The shower was dismantled this afternoon; it's provided by our neighbor camp to the north, House Bloodjack. We provide the hot water.

Anna is anticipating potential drama with House Bloodjack next year. One of their families with 3 kids is feeling ill treated, and we've offered let them join our camp. If pre-registered, Bloodjack would loose 1250 sq ft (116 sq m) and we would gain it. The family's tent takes up some of that space, leaving close to 1000 sq ft (93 sq m) of communal camp space. The shared shower is in Caer Edgemere's land, and we may need to provide our own if it somehow becomes leverage in a neighbor squabble. (And Bloodjack would have to figure out where to put their own shower - and how to heat it; I've remarked before that comfortable bathing is my threshold for civilized living.)

Anna is singing. She has a lovely voice, and an extensive repertoire of folk and filk. She's mentioned interest in the KWC before, but it doesn't seem to have ever gone anywhere. She's certainly capable of singing with us. It would take time away from merchant booth work, but I think she would enjoy it.

The plan is to pack out Caer Edgemere tomorrow. Everyone has to be gone by Sunday noon, but waiting until Sunday and getting out by noon isn't workable for this camp. Starting in the morning and getting out Saturday is possible. That may leave me getting on the road pretty late. ☹ Staying over until Sunday means needing the tent and sleeping bag, so essentially not loading the car until Sunday. ☹
The weather was sunny today. As far as I know, we're still expecting rain tomorrow. Packing a wet tent means unpacking it at home to dry out. ☹ (And I already know my rugs are wet.)

We're now renting a storage locker nearby for $700/year. This is presumably cheaper than leaving a loaded trailer here at the campsite. But we have a lot of camp infrastructure that is used only at Pennsic (e.g. the water heater, stove, and communal garage tent), and taking it back to Wheeling, WVa (a) is a hassle and (b) takes away space for other things that do need to make the longer trip, requiring additional trips. This is another cost to be shared among the rest of us, but some of us can afford it, and it's taking a major load off the people who do most of the work that keeps this camp functioning and appealing.
